The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I’m a sucker for stats. It’s part of what attracted me to 750 words originally, though I have to admit absolutely everything else added to it and continues to keep me coming back for more.

Some sort of Export/Backup

First and foremost, thanks for creating such an awesome application!

I’ve seen a few patrons request an export/backup feature and I agree with them. I hope that 750words stays around forever and that the uptime increases, but it’d give me peace of mind to know I had a copy of every entry.

A wise friend once told me “Your relationship with others is a reflection of your relationship with yourself.” 750 words does just that – reflects your relationship with yourself. Lets see if I can keep my “1 day streak” going!

I am delighted to have found this site and glad to be in a position to help support it. 750Words provides the most supportive yet unobtrusive framework to encourage daily writing I have ever encountered. Thanks Buster! I hope these few cups help keep it running.

There’s probably some connection between 750 Words and this, my new photoblog project, in which I’m posting a new iPhone picture every day for a year. I started them around the same time, at any rate. And both seem to me to have something to do with creativity and discipline, or the intersection of the two: Creative discipline, maybe, or disciplined creativity, or something. Anyway, take a look if you’re so inclined.

This site has helped me begin my day with writing. Which lead me to write more later in the day for work. Which leads me to come back the next day. Thank you for creating the site, I appreciate it!

I am so grateful to 750 words for appealing to my competitive nature, but anonymously. This site rocks my socks and a side bonus is lots of my writing ends up being about gratitude. Thanks for improving my everyday.

Logging in Clarity

Basically, I have a problem. As I regularly run Google and Facebook at the same time, sometimes 750words decides to log into the wrong one (I only use one). Is there any chance that the likelihood of this happening could be reduced or the account one is logged into could be displayed?

Glad to have this site. Although I started writing again without its aid, I can safely say that the stats and challenges are a strong motivating force.

Like many others on this site, I love writing and consider it my talent…but I can never seem to make myself ACTUALLY write. 750 Words is a clean, simple, quiet place to clear my mind of the bits and pieces of my day and life, so that I may then get down to business. Instead of a chore that ends up sidelined by procrastination, 750 Words makes writing a few pages every day a fun challenge.

Thanks, Buster!

A better mobile site

I had no idea a mobile site existed, but it would be awesome for those days when I’m traveling or on the run and can’t necessarily get online via my netbook. I checked it out, but I’m unable to log-on right now on my blackberry via facebook. Thank you!

750 Words, has already had a huge positive effect on my writing. I have never been one for writing long letters are being able to write a diary or journal, but through &50 words I have captured the essence of the days I have written about and also written some great letters to my family and my partner.

I also think the cups of patronage idea is brilliant, give to charity & support the site at the same time and all for $4 or £2.71 as we call it in my neck of the woods.

Thank you for all your hard work on the 750words.com. The closest I’ve been able to come to putting into words how useful your site has been is ‘cathartic’. It has amazed me how I can start out thinking I’ve got one thing on my mind, but as I allow my fingers the freedom to type something entirely different will stream onto the page. Thank you.

Buster has DONE IT! What a great app. The world is truly a better place with 750words.com. In the same way that cycling has eclipsed running as my favorite form of exercise, 750words.com eclipses morning pages because there’s JUST ENOUGH geekery involved in the practice to stay hooked. Not too much technology…just enough.

Morning pages are a great tool, and one that’s too easy for me to forsake. Your implementation of it here is a soothing ritual and an exercise that yields returns in my own creativity, peace of mind, and dare I say even, cognitive development.

So. Thank you, Buster. May this be one in a long string of successful projects to which you put your shoulder, and may your development of 750 only continue on the up and up.

My vote for security (via SSL on YOUR server)as well as) a request to have Google Docs sync/backup of posts. I’d love to have a folder in my GDocs account that, someday, is full of my chronicled life (albeit not interesting to anyone but my descendants).

Again, thanks and best wishes!

Eric

I’m writing again! I put my pen down a few years ago and focused on the needs of my children and the swirling schedule of activities. My calendar is still overflowing – but I’ve been trying to scratch out some time and space for ME. Thank you for the daily kick in the butt – I love seeing my reminder email at 5 am. I know I’m going to fit at least 750 words into my day.

Back-up/sync your 750 words

I am very much enjoying using 750 words! It has positively changed my writing habits, and for that I am thankful, Buster.

It would, however, make me feel safer if there was a way to back-up/sync automatically what you write with a DropBox account for example. Or maybe have an automatic email service sending you a copy of your latest entries. This way if something goes wrong and you haven’t downloaded your .txt file for the month, all your work will still be safe!

Feels good to write “stream-of-consciousness” but that requires confidence in the writing being secure and remaining private. :-)

I’m a writer, but 750 Words is more than a writing exercise for me. It’s about discipline (which I lack, generally speaking), about unfettering creativity, and about making some room for the small thoughts that tend to get crowded aside in a noisy information culture. I’m hooked. And I’m grateful to Buster not just for creating it, but for making it look so good, work so well, and have such a great spirit.

For the last 15 years or so I’ve said that what I want to do is “be a writer.” I’ve run a tiny magazine, did a short stint as a small town reporter, and spent the last year as a “professional blogger.” Yet I still haven’t been able to actually write the stories that I actually care about. On day 11 of using 750, I’ve gotten to the point where I can’t do a day’s work without first putting in my 750, and suddenly I’m also giving the same time to my own legit projects. It’s been a “high colonic” for what’s really been a decade and a half blockage… it’s replaced my morning cig & coffee, as the jump start to my day. Thanks for this.

750 Words has given me the motivation and opportunity to sit down on a daily basis and WRITE. I’m a College Freshman, and this is the best tool for ADD I’ve seen in my life. You’ve rocked my world, the past week, and I’m seven for seven. Thanks a ton. I’m an addict, and loving it.

I get to the office early in the morning, usually around 5:30am. I like to do my writing then when I’m least distracted, however, I have to deal with nosey network admin’s sometimes and if the things I do aren’t over SSL they’ll notice :(
