The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Better infrastructure

I’d like to see the infrastructure of the site able to support hundreds of thousands of writers at a time without slowing down. Love the other features — but the back end stuff is way more important.

I was a fan of the Morning Pages when I first read The Artist’s Way as a college student, but between my schedule and the rampant ADHD (yes, we’re blaming that) I could never find time or remember that i needed to do it. Upon discovering your site I realized I could type 90billion times faster than I write, and this would help me to do the morning pages. The excitement I felt was wonderful.
One month later and I find that by doing my morning “brain dump”, I have become far more creative. I use far more eloquent language when talking to others and I’m more descriptive, as the mono-syllabic clutter has been swept out of the way. I write more, I paint more and I create more, and it’s wonderful. Thank you so much for setting this site up and offering it to others for its use. It’s been invaluable in helping keep my head clear to focus on other things.

Myself

Wait, I thought this was a place for a self-promotional note? There’s no link, I just wanted everyone to know that I think I’m pretty fantastic.

Peace,

Thanks for the site, Buster! I’ve always had a hard time getting into keeping a journal, but this has gotten me the furthest of anything. It’s a nice mix of ease of use and stats to feed the other side of my brain. I will make it through this month’s challenge!
One thing that might be cool to make as an optional feature is to have a sidebar cycling through writing prompts. I’ve started working through the Self-awareness questions at http://www.selfgrowth.com/articles/40_Questions_To_Improve_Your_Self_Awareness.html but once those are done, having something catch my eye and prompting a new train of thought would be nice. I realize not everyone would want that, though, so it would probably need to be something that could be turned on.

Thanks again!

This is my second day on the site, which makes me the kind of person who probably will love it for a week and quit. But I’m already insanely addicted. Just writing for fifteen minutes the past two days—furiously typing out a stream of consciousness—has made me calmer, more focused, and happier. Also late to work, but, you know. Some things are more important.

It’s also the only place where I’ve found the thing I’ve been searching for for years—a word counter built into the word processor. Genius! And the statistics make writing as exciting as reviewing my running via my GPS program (runkeeper).

I’m assuming my response to this site is pretty typical, so this note is somewhat banal to the rest of the users. But I couldn’t be happier. This answers so many problems for me right now, although I can’t quite figure out why. It’s just great.

This site really is a great way to feel like I’m a part of something bigger and to encourage myself to write every day. I would feel like a hypocrite if I didn’t vote with my wallet.

Improve the homepage

I would love to see additional information in the FAQ. For example: how is the daily top 100 list derived (especially among writers with the same amount of points) and how much elapsed time is considered a “distraction”? Thanks!

Buster. Thanks. 31 days. Zero misses. I know I can write. I’ve done well with it. But it’s been a struggle. This is EXACTLY what I need. I hope this becomes very profitable for you; it certainly has struck a chord.

Yes, I intend to make my April as powerful and happy as my March. This past month has been personally very traumatic- but 750 words has been a great positive in my day; even when i was exhausted.

The end of my first month on 750words. I missed two days when I was simply travelling and offline. My commitment and follow through has restored my faith in myself. I am very grateful.

This is a useful adjunct to the overnight technique of “assigning” one’s subconscious a problem to solve, and a convenient way to develop a thought-capture habit, with no temptation to polish because, short of copying and pasting elsewhere, what gets typed here stays here.

Bravo!

illustrated journaling

I love buster’s site. It encourages me to write each and every day.

I’ve been journaling in a book for years and also have used many electronic journals but this site gives me pictures at the end of my writing session. Now that is cool.

I like pictures and words together.

In the last three years, to augment my words, I’ve been adding small sketches (examples at the web site). The small, simple drawings have help me remember the feel of the event or day. I call this “illustrated journaling” and here’s how it works:

1) Get a blank journal
2) Carry it with you during the day.
3) At breakfast, lunch, or some other time draw something small that is sitting right in front of you as you relax.
4) At the end of the day, add words around the sketch
5) Optional: add color to the sketch (use watercolor or colored pencils, whatever)

At the end of the year you’ll have an awesome illustrated journal like no other you’ve ever kept.

Along the lines of the daily challenge, 365 Hats is a blog about knitting a tiny hat every day for charity. Full of random acts of kindness, random colour/fibre combinations and random commentary. Thanks! :)

750 words has been a revelation. I’d never considered the idea of private journaling before and while I dropped the ball pretty big time in March, I’ve seen all kinds of benefits to getting my thoughts down and out of my head and can’t wait to pick up the torch again in April.

I found this site just as I was discovering my desire to write. Looking back now I can see how writing had been a big thing in my life but I never thought about it properly until I found this site. I love it. I want to write all the time because I genuinely find it to be inspirational. It’s therapeutic. It feels natural and the words just flow from my mind, through my fingers and onto this brilliant site.

I have an overwhelming desire to shake Buster Benson’s hand for this gift he has given us. That is exactly what it is… a gift. I applaud him for it, wish him the best of luck for his life, his endeavours, his family and to his overall success.

This site deserves more than a mere $4 from me. But I’ll do what I can.

Thank you, so much.

Buster, I missed out on completing my 750 words yesterday by 6 minutes. I had spent too long in the grocery story at 11 p.m deciding what kind of cake mix to buy and didn’t leave myself enough time to complete my entry before midnight. Like Cinderella I was hoping against hope that the dreaded 12 would stay its chiming for a few moments longer. Alas, your fail safe mechanism kicked me out at something less than 600 words. So I got picked up where I left off and got Sunday’s writing done at 12:25 a.m.

I love the motivation 750Words gives me. THANKS.

If you, random person in the internets ether, have been umm-ing and ahh-ing about 750 words, let me make the decision for you – sign up, now.

Everything from the simple but beautifully elegant interface counting up to your 750 words through to the statistical analysis of your own 750 word brain dump has been a real treat.

I have tried Julia Cameron’s written version of the morning pages, but never kept up with it- thanks to 750 words, I am on a nine day streak. More importantly, I have started to make some shifts in my own life based on what I have written and how I have sorted out my brain. Good life shifts and insights. Who wouldn’t want those? (Well, maybe those of the curmudgeonly persuasion. I am sure 750 words will help them to be more bitter and jaded, if that is their goal).

I am glad to be a patron and will continue to raise my cup(s) of patronage to 750 Words in the future.
