The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

To all the good people out there, keep writing! Writing’s awesome, and especially when you have no idea what it is when it’s flowing out your fingers, and then you go back and read it and smile at its coherence (or lack thereof). Well, here’re more cups to the bounty for this month! The pot must be getting quite big now, no?

I have a writing discipline problem, and 750 has helped me keep at it even when I am tired (like right now) and rationalizing that I can write tomorrow. To date I’ve gone 33 days in a row, mostly in the late evenings, clearing the junk outta my head and sometimes better. This site is my anchor to Robert Anton Wilson’s creed of Do It Every Day.
I’ve also been inspired to reconsider my commitment to my own writing goals, and I realize that doing this in the morning will be as much of a commitment for me as doing this for another straight month. So thanks, Buster!

A badge for completing a certain number (2? 3? 5? 6? 10? 12?) of One Month Challenges? Or one for writing every day for one whole year?

Wow! It’s a thrill to have completed a One Month Challenge. Good luck to everyone writing in May, and adding this bounty to those writing in June!

A Website Widget?

I’d really love to have a little HTML/javascript widget for my site, to both promote 750words and show off my writing stats. Ideally it would say something like “Carl as written a total of XXX words, and is on a XXX-day streak”, followed by a link/logo. It should also be style-able with Custom CSS to blend nicely with whatever site it appears on.
I’d do it myself, but don’t know enough javascript.

There’s a reason I’ve waited till I’d completely finished the first monthly challenge to make a donation. You see, normally with things like this, I start off with a hiss and a roar, but find my enthusiasm quickly dwindles after the initial buzz wears off. But here I am on 750words, 6 weeks after starting, and still going strong. I haven’t found something this good for my writing (and mental health?), well, ever. I’ve known for a long time that I should be in the habit of daily writing, but, well, I’m not a very disciplined person. But this website has, somehow, magically provided me with just the right incentives I need to keep it up. I don’t know if it the simple, yet excellent site design, the slightly-competitive element, or the geeky stats and what-not, but it’s working. Thanks Buster. Love it.

Oh, and thanks to 750words, I’ve managed to find the inspiration to setup my own blog and, you know, actually write stuff for it. If anyone’s interested: http://philosophicalzombie.net/

Those Xs are pretty heavy. Today I looked at one, but I knew there were thirty more behind it. I was tired. I didn’t want to write. I thought about copypasta. Fortunately, I decided to write. Today, the pressure of the Xs ended up calming me down.

Loved to see my horse this morning! But more important that the equine, this site has gotten me motivated like nothing else to write every day. Reading Steven Pressfield, Seth Godin, and Merlin Mann convinced me of the need to get down to business, but this site really gives me the extra kick. I love the stats and the reminder email. 50 days and still going…

Over 50 thousands words in under 60 days. There comes a time, fairly soon after keeping up this kind of writing that one runs out of things to write about the self. It is interesting to see that no matter how selfish one maybe, there is just not that much to talk about. So, the question festers: What to write? Were it not for 750Words, All the topics the author had always wanted to research (and is still doing so) would not have been done: Politics, Political Philosophy, Religion, Religious Morality, Moral Certainty, Secularism, Law, Supreme Court Case Analysis, etc. This has resulted in many more books read, and quite a few absolutley useless facts memorized, perfect for parties.

Thanks to this site, I’m back to writing every day, just spilling stuff out. It’s not particularly valuable stuff, but it does clear my mind and honestly it’s helped me manage stress and anxiety right now in other areas of my life. It’s also reminding me that I am a writer; I’ve always been a writer; and that writers write. Nothing I’ve written so far has been particularly beautiful or creative, but the process is enhancing my life and making my experience of it a teensy bit more of both.

Thanks!

More points

I’d like more ways to earn more points. More words per day (maybe an extra point for every 300 words beyond 750)? More accumulation points. Just a thought. Cuz: I like points.

Thank you for this wonderful site! I always wanted to write, but always found excuses and ways to postpone and procrastinate…Now that I found this site, I write everyday and have already finished my first story. Although I was at first more excited about private journaling aspect, I came to appreciate the stats feature. It is inspiring to see monthly writing progress!

Story/Entry title

It would appear on the stats page along with other stats, such as number of words, minutes, etc. I am sure a lot of people who use the site to sketch up future stories, just like I do, would appreciate this feature. It can be optional, so those who don’t need it, would not title their entries. Thank you for your consideration!

As a busy student, and a Creative Writing major nonetheless, I find it really hard to find the time and motivation to write everyday…that is until I discovered 750words. Thanks for creating this amazing site—I am so proud of my Awesome Horse badge and happy to have been able to earn it through such an inspiring, fun and easy avenue.

Offline Access

My internet connection is very flaky, and I am always concerned that I won’t be able to find a time when my internet is working that I can write my words. I would hate to loose my streak just because of my internet connection. That is why I think some sort of offline access or desktop client would be good so that I could still write every day, and when I have a connection the information could be uploaded to the site. Just a thought.

I have been trying to get in the habit of writing in my journal for a couple of years now. Luckily I stumbled upon 750 words and now I have a personal record of 51 days in a row of writing. I really feel like it is turning into a habit and I am motivated to make it 100 days. Thank you so much for making this program free to the public and simple to use. The process of writing everyday has proven to be very therapeutic and it is amazing how much a silly little idea like this has helped me in a very real way. Thank You.

I am the quintessential starter. I come up with projects, new habits, etc. and tend to last about a week if I’m really focused. For the first time in a long time I committed to something for 30 days and accomplished it thanks in no small part to how simple and pleasant using the site is. So thanks Buster.

750words.com is a great and fun website to allow a daily “brain unload”. Buster has done a great job of creating this site. He is very interactive and interested in listening to people’s input to make the site fun and more interesting. He is also very quick to respond to any issues that do come up. Thanks and Great Job Buster!

This site has been great in offering motivation for writing everyday, and space to be part of a community that is not gathered around a commercial or self-interest driven enterprise. Thanks Buster, and best of luck with the newborn. I have a 15 month old, and as the one doing the extended breastfeeding, it has been especially helpful for me to find my way back into writing through your site. Parenthood rocks.
