The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I am so grateful for the monthly challenge and how it inspires me to write daily on this site (no matter what!) that I decided to add a cup of patronage to the bounty for other writers who feel the same way. Keep the words flowing!

750words has invoked the competitiveness-with-self part of my personality. I prefer to see it as devotion to excellence, which sounds so much better than COMPETITIVE. Now that I have succeeded in not only one monthly challenge, but TWO monthly challenges in a row, I feel as if I can do almost anything. It is a GREAT feeling! THANK YOU!

While I fell out of the running for June, I love the challenge of writing every day for a month and I want to encourage everyone to clear their mind, reflect and write, write, write.
Thanks for this Buster!

An iPhone/iPad app

Preferably one that can operate offline and then link to the live sits, so that I can take it on holidays with me. But thanks so much for this site. Keep up the good work.

More text analysis

I write in spanish and I would love to see text analysis that makes sense! I know this one feature may be hard to implement, but it would really be awesome.

I’ve always enjoyed writing; flash fiction, journal entries, you name it. But I could never keep at it on a regular basis. Your site somehow managed to do this; I earned the Phoenix badge a couple of days ago and it left me speechless, as it stared at me from my inbox. I don’t know what does it, the cute badges? the monthly challenge? Whatever it is, you’ve got something really great here Buster. Thanks so much for turning an impossibility into something so simple and yet so brilliant.

750 Words cured my writer’s block!! I have for the last 44 days come to this site and written. It is helping me clear my head of bits and pieces. I have already found two or three story seeds that I want to plant and grow. It has helped me get more serious about my writing, because I am becoming focused. I owe so much to 750 Words and Buster that I can’t even explain it fully. Thank you!

I wrote that I would donate $10 if I failed the June challenge, but I am donating $20 because I have successfully completed the challenge. I usually don’t stick with things for more than a few days, but there is something about 750words.com that resonates with my psyche. Thanks for making this site.

I use this site to clear my mind from unwanted angers and frustrations that I don’t want to put in my blog. It’s also a great place for brain storming story plots, character info, etc. I’ve even used it to interview characters.

Improve the writing page

Ah. I would really like to be able to italicize and bold things in my writing – for emphasis and whatnot. I like to format things correctly, you see…like titles of books that I may feel the need to discuss in my 750 words. Sometimes also I am filled with rage and want to make things bold and angry.

Good luck in the July challenge everyone. I missed one day in June and hope to get back to my streak soon (was 83 days at one point!). I’m now on 16 days. Every long streak has to start somewhere doesn’t it? Cheers!

A few weeks before my birthday in late May I’d promised myself to set aside 30 minutes a day to write. And it didn’t work, I just couldn’t seem to find the time to do it. Now that I’ve found 750words, it’s a whole different story. Something about the site makes me set aside the last hour of the day for writing and I do it. Thank you so much for such a great inspiring site!

Frequently used words cloud for all eternity

I like looking at the frequently used words daily and monthly, so it would be great if there was a frequently used words cloud for our entire time here on 750 words. I have a feeling it might become too wordy and convoluted and clog up the site in the process, but just a thought!

After just four (delirious, sleep-deficient) days, I see 750 Words becoming a powerful agent of change. My meta-pledge: coffee each time I miss the mark – may some good come of my missteps. I want (truly, desperately) to be a better me – please excuse (indulge) me using your site to do so. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I didn’t know how much I was looking forward to my phoenix badge until I blew a 70 day streak. I was having trouble accessing the site and I didn’t think to try restarting Firefox until approximately fifteen minutes before midnight. I don’t type fast enough to have saved my streak. And then today, I got home from a concert late last night and didn’t get to bed until around 3:30am. I slept late this morning and didn’t even think about writing my words until 11:50pm. This time, I only blew a seven day streak. The moral of this story is write your words early and don’t wait until the last minute to trouble shoot your access to the site. It will be at least October before I earn my phoenix but I’m going to keep at it. I get too much out of writing my morning pages to quit at this point.

I thought that writing every day would be good to get my creativity flowing through my fingers. And, I suppose that it has. But, it’s amazing how it’s changed my outlook, albeit modestly. First of all, I now look forward to writing every day, and that’s surprising: that I’d look forward to being so focused (yes, a problem for me). Secondly, since I often write about what I’ve thought during the day, I’m more conscious of my thoughts during the day…sort of taking notes for the day’s writing. And, finally…well, not finally finally, but finally for now…I’ve amazed myself by being confronted with a blank screen, thinking that I’ll write about some particular topic, and find myself going somewhere else entirely. How cool!

Thanks for explaining the badges. 3/4 of the way to 100 thousand words and earning the flock badge.

I started using 750 words during a time of great stress in my life. I always wanted to journal more, but never found the time to do it. 750 words was a great morning brain dump for me. And now I find myself not having as much that I “need” to write about. Leaving my worries on the page has helped me more than I thought possible.

An unexpected personal reward has started to show itself. I started out taking about 30 minutes to write my 750 words at around 25 wpm. I am now a month in, and I can crank out the 750 easily in 12 minutes maxing out at 80 wpm in some places.

I have never in my life been able to keep a journal for more than 2 days – literally. I am now on my 47th day straight of writing over 750 words, and I haven’t failed to write a single day since I started.

I feel that this site has really improved my life. I feel more focused, and I always come out of this in the morning knowing exactly what I have to do the rest of the day.

Thank you Buster!

Yesterday I told my sisters that I was about to cross the 100-day mark, and they threatened to tie me up and lock me in a closet all day. Fortunately I thwarted their plans and now I’ve made it to the coveted Phoenix!

In the last 100 days I’ve worked harder on my fiction than ever before in my life, and went though with a major life decision that I had been worrying over for years. I was able to avoid dealing with it until I was forced to dump my brain on a daily basis, and I found my thoughts moving unswervingly back to the same place. Thanks so much for this space, Buster — it’s changed the course of my life.

I’m just so delighted for my new 100,000 words badge. 100,000 words!!! I hit that a couple weeks ago, and quietly celebrated by myself, but it’s an unexpected treat to see a new badge as well (even though I know there are a few of them coming out of the Badge Machine right now).
