The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

More badges will keep me writing!!! It’s pathetic, but true. I need the cookie to finish the job. I need to promise/threat of a streak to complete. I need the mystery of Early Bird to uncover!

I used 750 words for the first time today. It was fun, it was easy, it helped me clarify my thoughts on my own writing. If I can follow through on this commitment, I think this site may be amazingly helpful to to me. My thanks both to the site creator and to the person who recommended it to me!

I’ve been writing at least 750 words every day since the end of August. My spelling is better! My thoughts come together more coherently. I feel a commitment to something that I’ve never felt before. It makes me realize that this is possible in other areas of my life: my Art, my Work, my Business. And it’s happening.
My friends notice that my emails are longer and make more sense.
I’ve made promises before to do something for myself everyday (like meditate or draw or write); this is the first time I’ve kept my promise for so long.

Addictive? YES! that’s the color of commitment.
(It’s also turquoise and shaped like a horse.)

750words helps me to collect my thoughts, & to recollect my day. Being ADHD, a private brain dump is not only relieving, but almost necessary. A day or two later, I can easily return to my journal to recall information that I need to recall.

Also, I really enjoy looking at my stats afterward – even if I believe they are a little skewed from time to time, they are often spot-on. I learn a bit more about myself as time goes on, & as I continue to trust 750words with my most emotionally charged thoughts, I find those emotions a bit easier to manage throughout the day.

Thanks.

Hi Buster and everyone else reading this. I’m participating in NaNoWriMo this month(National Novel Writing Month: nanowrimo.org). In addition, I am competing in the one month challenge on 750 words. 750 words gives me a smaller goal I can achieve before moving on to write more. I only plan to write my novel and metadata on 750 words this month so I can get a full analysis of my novel and writing habits at the end of the month. Thanks for such an amazing, powerful, beautiful, and motivational site. I found it surprising how small the amount of people is that have donated money to your site and to NaNoWriMo(only 2.46% of NaNoWriMo participants have donated anything). I will donate more when I WIN this month’s challenge and finish my novel!

I’ve been writing now for 48 days in a row…and now I’m doing NaNoWriMo, a challenge I thought I’d never be able to complete! The badges, the stats, the community and the encouragement have all helped to get me there…and achieve something I never thought I’d have the discipline or commitment to do.

I’ve written 7,042 words this month – here’s hoping I can do the other 43,000 to get my ‘novel’ out by the end of the month – but with the help of this site, I MIGHT JUST DO IT, you know ;)

On the eve of my fall from albatrossdom, I am writing to acknowledge how the prospect of a new badge appearing near my name (I am, despite my best judgment, eager to earn not only my phoenix, but my pterodactyl… ) has gotten me to write when I didn’t want to, has helped me to get motivated to clear the cruft from between my ears so that I can write the “good stuff” and has yielded a more creative and productive me. And next week when I return to civilization (and the internet), I will begin anew and grow my pterodactyl from an egg…

I’m amazed with how much more clearly I’m thinking. Recently, I won my second one-month challenge, right around the time I got my 100,000 words badge, and the day I discovered it, I feel like the smile on my face didn’t go away for days. There’s a really honest sense of accomplishment that comes from this sort of experience. While it’s hard to explain why simply writing three pages every day affects my state of mind so profoundly, anyone who sticks with this project for long enough inevitably comes to know the lasting effect a consistent writing habit visits on people. Though the following statement will require a quick knock on wood, it should be said. I don’t think I could miss a day now if I tried! Great project, and super helpful!

I know I posted about this elsewhere before, but I really want a blog badge! I want everyone that reads my public ramblings to experience the awesomeness that is 750 Words. If clicking my random badge would get them interested, I’d be happy to rep the site! (In particular, I’d love a wee 36px icon type thing to go crazy html with.)

Six days ago, my college aged daughter mentioned something about NaNoWriMo. I looked it up and found 750. Sounds great. So I signed up. I began writing on Nov 1 and cannot believe how easy it is flowing. Do not tell me I will hit a glitch now, but for three days running I feel great. PS. I do not know if my daughter is writing or not and I am not telling her that I am. It gets better every day… Thanks.

I received a Ph.D. over a year ago and have been working in a decidedly un-academic setting ever since (the academic job market is awful right now, as many of you probably know). While I love my job (I teach flying trapeze and other circus arts), I miss writing creatively and academically. 750 words has encouraged me to get back to writing every day, even if it’s drivel. I am now more focused and have developed a prospectus for a new paper that I am very excited to research and write. Funnily enough, it will combine my academic interests with my circus interests. It took this site for me to see that I can work with both disciplines at once and make something interesting come out of the effort. Hooray for 750words!

I’m using 750 Words for NaNoWriMo this year. In fact, 750 Words is part of the reason I’m doing NaNoWriMo this year at all. I’ve done it before but I didn’t think I’d have time, and then the 750 Words blog talked about using the site to keep track of word count. What a fabulous idea! And it works gorgeously. Now let’s just keep our fingers crossed that I can keep up the pace!

There were nights where I lay my face on the keyboard, whining about how I didn’t feel like writing 750 words that day. But man oh man did I want that purple horse badge. 750 Words has pushed me towards writing everyday and it’s becoming a good habit of mine. There are still some nights where I get the imprints of the keyboard on my face, but those 750 words get done….eventually. Thank you so much! Enjoy the coffee.

750words made me smile this morning. I wanted to get an early start on my NaNoWriMo writing. 750words let me know when I passed 750 words and when I passed 1667 words. Then, as a bonus, my daily email said that since I had done my writing, I should enjoy my day. And I got a beautiful, red rose! Thanks Buster!

I’ve been keeping a morning journal for the past ten months, but I’ve never been able to write in it every day, and the length has always varied a lot, from a few sentences to several pages.

With 750 words I’m able to work more concentrated and write more often. It’s a relief to have a word counter, and to be able to write on my laptop (which, to me, is a lot easier and faster than using pen and paper). It’s a great help in my creative writing.
