The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Ah. I would really like to be able to italicize and bold things in my writing – for emphasis and whatnot. I like to format things correctly, you see…like titles of books that I may feel the need to discuss in my 750 words. Sometimes also I am filled with rage and want to make things bold and angry.

Good luck in the July challenge everyone. I missed one day in June and hope to get back to my streak soon (was 83 days at one point!). I’m now on 16 days. Every long streak has to start somewhere doesn’t it? Cheers!

A few weeks before my birthday in late May I’d promised myself to set aside 30 minutes a day to write. And it didn’t work, I just couldn’t seem to find the time to do it. Now that I’ve found 750words, it’s a whole different story. Something about the site makes me set aside the last hour of the day for writing and I do it. Thank you so much for such a great inspiring site!

Thanks so much for this amazing site. I’m on a thirty day streak, longer than I have managed to do in quite a long time.

Frequently used words cloud for all eternity

I like looking at the frequently used words daily and monthly, so it would be great if there was a frequently used words cloud for our entire time here on 750 words. I have a feeling it might become too wordy and convoluted and clog up the site in the process, but just a thought!

After just four (delirious, sleep-deficient) days, I see 750 Words becoming a powerful agent of change. My meta-pledge: coffee each time I miss the mark – may some good come of my missteps. I want (truly, desperately) to be a better me – please excuse (indulge) me using your site to do so. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I didn’t know how much I was looking forward to my phoenix badge until I blew a 70 day streak. I was having trouble accessing the site and I didn’t think to try restarting Firefox until approximately fifteen minutes before midnight. I don’t type fast enough to have saved my streak. And then today, I got home from a concert late last night and didn’t get to bed until around 3:30am. I slept late this morning and didn’t even think about writing my words until 11:50pm. This time, I only blew a seven day streak. The moral of this story is write your words early and don’t wait until the last minute to trouble shoot your access to the site. It will be at least October before I earn my phoenix but I’m going to keep at it. I get too much out of writing my morning pages to quit at this point.

I thought that writing every day would be good to get my creativity flowing through my fingers. And, I suppose that it has. But, it’s amazing how it’s changed my outlook, albeit modestly. First of all, I now look forward to writing every day, and that’s surprising: that I’d look forward to being so focused (yes, a problem for me). Secondly, since I often write about what I’ve thought during the day, I’m more conscious of my thoughts during the day…sort of taking notes for the day’s writing. And, finally…well, not finally finally, but finally for now…I’ve amazed myself by being confronted with a blank screen, thinking that I’ll write about some particular topic, and find myself going somewhere else entirely. How cool!

Thanks for explaining the badges. 3/4 of the way to 100 thousand words and earning the flock badge.

So good to be able to clear out the junk everyday and move on with a clear head.

I started using 750 words during a time of great stress in my life. I always wanted to journal more, but never found the time to do it. 750 words was a great morning brain dump for me. And now I find myself not having as much that I “need” to write about. Leaving my worries on the page has helped me more than I thought possible.

An unexpected personal reward has started to show itself. I started out taking about 30 minutes to write my 750 words at around 25 wpm. I am now a month in, and I can crank out the 750 easily in 12 minutes maxing out at 80 wpm in some places.

I have never in my life been able to keep a journal for more than 2 days – literally. I am now on my 47th day straight of writing over 750 words, and I haven’t failed to write a single day since I started.

I feel that this site has really improved my life. I feel more focused, and I always come out of this in the morning knowing exactly what I have to do the rest of the day.

Thank you Buster!

Yesterday I told my sisters that I was about to cross the 100-day mark, and they threatened to tie me up and lock me in a closet all day. Fortunately I thwarted their plans and now I’ve made it to the coveted Phoenix!

In the last 100 days I’ve worked harder on my fiction than ever before in my life, and went though with a major life decision that I had been worrying over for years. I was able to avoid dealing with it until I was forced to dump my brain on a daily basis, and I found my thoughts moving unswervingly back to the same place. Thanks so much for this space, Buster — it’s changed the course of my life.

I’m just so delighted for my new 100,000 words badge. 100,000 words!!! I hit that a couple weeks ago, and quietly celebrated by myself, but it’s an unexpected treat to see a new badge as well (even though I know there are a few of them coming out of the Badge Machine right now).

My first one month challenge was excellent for getting me in the habit and a damn fine habit it is. I’m not giving up my spot on the wall of Awesome for something as trivial as RL. :)

Without all the stuff: the icons, the charts, the word cloud, the lists of other people, the monthly challenges, the reminder emails, the word count and timers, I would never have found myself where I am this morning, having written for 100 straight days, and having averaged over 1,000 words a day over that stretch.

Thanks so much for this site. It really has changed me in a very positive way. And while the accomplishment is mine, the tools to make it happen belong to you, Buster.

Continue current writing even when a new day starts.

This is simple, don’t kill my writing for the day just because the day ends before I complete my words. The start time should dictate the day of the writing regardless of the end time. Right now the writer gets an error instructing a reload to start writing for the new day.

I’ve long wanted a private but online way of implementing Julia Cameron’s morning pages. Thanks so much for this — and for automated data inferences that are pulled from each entry so that we get a snapshot view of what’s in our stream-of-consciousness. Love those and the little badges as well (okay, I’m still a 5-year old at heart and like my motivating stickers!).

I’m spreading the word re: to all the writers I know!

Improve the daily reminder email

Mostly just add some inspiration about what to write. I’d love to help, even – maybe a writing exercise in there, or just a nudge in the right direction to break up writing about just yourself.

This site has made me do some crazy things to get home and pour out my soul – one evening, on my way to a play, I realized that there was no way that I would be able to get home in time to do my customary evening 750 words.

I promptly called my housemate, asked him to bring my computer with him to downtown SF, and bought him a drink for it.

750 words has re-instilled in me the value of writing every day, and now it seems I’ll do anything to keep it going.

This site changed me, everyday I start my morning with the 750 words, luckily I can finish my 100th day yesterday.
Thanks for helping me clarify my brain, brainstorm my ideas, and let me get in touch with myself again.

Now I am a man with a plan and I use this site to plan not just my everyday work, but I plan my life.

thanks so much, :D
