The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Before I started using 750 words, I struggled with anxiety, worry, and panic attacks. A friend of mine recommended this site to me and challenged me to write for thirty days straight. I’m on day ninety-three and I haven’t been back to the ER with an anxiety attack since I started writing. Each day I pour out all my thoughts and worries into the entry and I clear my head. Thank you for helping me find a way to express myself that challenges me to write more! I love 750words.com!

750 words helped me go deeper in my writing. The very first 750 words I wrote got a surprisingly strong response from people reading it. Thank you!

I love this site and wish more people would use it. Wouldn’t this world be a better place if each of us took the time (what? something like 20 minutes?) to sit and think and write. So, here’s to you, February writers. You earned it, but – more importantly – you did it because you could!

Cut-and-paste

Hello, Buster. Thanks, first of all, for putting this together; I look forward to writing my entry every day, which – I hope – is making me thing more and enjoy life more.
Here’s my thought: there are times when I have time to write but no internet connection. Sometimes it’s due to where I am (e.g. outside a client meeting, where there’s no available wifi) or something technical (e.g. the connection at home or work is iffy), so I write in another piece of software (Word, Pages, text editor, whatever’s easy) and then when I do get connected, I do a cut-and-paste. Which is fine (I know), but it screws up the times (“bam!” or “0:01 minutes”). So, it’d be nice if I could do the c-and-p when I need to BUT then be asked about how long it took me to do it. Sure, I’d be estimating (or, I guess, turn on some kind of stopwatch) and there’d be the trust/truth issue (although, why I’d lie about this is beyond me).

So, thanks again for what you’ve done. I’m excited that I’m only a couple of months away from 365 days! (my next personal goal).

I just earned the phoenix badge and I don’t understand how such a seemingly little thing has left me so proud. I have to write a note because other patrons are the only people who will understand my excitement! My friends at work would be like, “You earned a virtual badge for writing? What?” Anyway, I have not missed a day since my very first entry despite all sorts of craziness going on in my life, especially over the past month. Completing my words is one little thing I can do each day and feel like I’ve achieved something. I love it here and I am stoked to begin working on the pterodactyl badge!

750 Words has been a venue through which I’ve worked tirelessly to change my life over the last six months, and I would like a larger percentage of my patronage to do the same for others. Thank you.

Weekly prompts

I really enjoyed Reverb10 and haven’t written a word on my blog since – could we have a weekly prompt feature to inspire us to write something weekly?

This is a fantastic site. I’ve noticed that in writing my 750 words daily here, I’m able to work out all kinds of problems that have been bouncing around unresolved in my head. Just getting them down on “paper” clears my mind and inspires me to get on with my real writing. Love the metadata and the other statistics, and the ability to track overall word counts and earn badges. Signed up for a monthly patronage because I think I’m going to be sticking with this site for a long time to come!

I’ve been tracking metadata for six months now, since I started writing on this site. I live with MS, and one of the things I’ve tracked is my MS, day-to-day. I recently had a relapse, and I was able to pull up my metadata and determine exactly when my symptoms appeared, a full week earlier than I thought. I never could have done it without 750words.

Get out of jail free card

I support the idea of having a get out of jail free card, meaning that we could buy a day that we missed with a cup of patronage so that we didn’t mess up our streak.

However, it would seem to me that there should be a limit to the number of possible days per month or per 90 days. Otherwise, people would just be purchasing streaks, right?

Thanks for this great site, Buster!

I love the badges! And I just love the motivation that accruing a longer streak lends. Although I would love to have a badge/free pass option to deal with a skipped day due to sickness or emergencies.

I thrive on consistency, but it’s hard for me to develop it on my own. When I come here to write in the morning it helps me keep on track for the rest of the day. Yay for 750 Words!

Even on days when I’m not using 750words.com to keep me on track for writing fiction, it helps me sort through obstacles that may be preventing me from being creative or work through ideas for the next part of my story. I love the daily motivation to sit in front of my computer and work on my craft.

Android app

I think that this site would greatly benefit from an android app, that allows users to write their words on their phone while offline, still recording the time it was written, and how long it took, etc. These details would then be synced whenever the phone connects to the internet, getting analysed to bits and all that, allowing users to write their words normally on their phones, even if they don’t have internet connection for a few days.

I have used this site for a couple of different things. First I have used 750words to just dump straight out of my brain. Not only to figure out my own opinions but to be able to look back and figure out what things have been important to me. The second thing has been a way of just getting used to going through the act of writing every day. Every word that I manage to put down makes me that much more of the writer that I would like to be.

I started writing in my teenage years, it is a habit I have kept up some 30 odd years later. I have discovered that writing can be useful in many different ways. So Write On!!!

My husband and I split up on Dec. 22nd. We have a 4 year old son who was really looking forward to Christmas and I was devastated to say the least. I, luckily, have a sister who lives in town so we moved in with her. I used 750 words to help me through that difficult period. Then my doctor suggested writing a letter to my husband. So I did, I wrote him a love letter. It worked and we got back together on Dec. 31st. I showed the letter to our marriage counsellor and he told me I should take up writing professionally. That was such a big, huge compliment. I was very taken aback, I felt very flattered. I thanked him and told him that I have been writing for a long time. But the feeling that I had, the passion I had when I was writing that letter is what I know I need to find in order to write my novel. So, onward with the quest!!!

Finding and following people

I’m new to this site and this may exist already. I’m not sure how to find the profiles of people I’d like to follow. There are at least two of my friends on here but I don’t know how to find their profile pages. One is even a patron: I can see her name but there’s no link to her profile.

Adding Offline Writing

I like this idea of Jeffrey’s of being able to add days when you don’t have Internet access, as long as you wrote off line on that day. Michael Nobbs wrote on Wed, Jan 05 about a “get out of jail free card”. I am sure he didn’t mean it this way, but it makes me think if I DON’T WRITE on a particular day, I could use my “free” card to get back in the game by writing twice on another day.

If we could have a way of adding days in when we didn’t have Internet access, I would fully support this. I would even support giving Michael his streak back if he wrote on the day that he couldn’t log on and letting him be the first to use the new system .

I am now at 138 days in a row, but almost lost it when I was at a retreat and there was “no Internet access”, at least for “campers”. I was able to get permission to use the office computer for 30 minutes the two days I was there, so I was able to save my streak. There have been a few times when it has been iffy, and I would hate to lose my streak now!

I know this is just for us, in that we are writing for ourselves, and we are all on an honor system, but I would feel cheated if my 200 day streak (in another 62 days ) and someone else’s were not the same because they were allowed to take a “day off” and I wrote without missing a day.

I am glad to see that I am not alone in this fear of losing my streak, and am really thankful to both Jeffrey and Michael for bringing up ideas to consider.

I love this site and have noticed that my typing has improved as well as being able to get over 130,000 words out of my brain and onto my 750Word pages since I started!

Now if I could just do as well with my Health Challenge!! 
