The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Find my 1-month Challenge Notes

Hi….maybe I’m missing something, but when I signed up for the 1 month challenge in February, I pledged something like $20.00 if I failed, or $10.00 if I succeeded. Since I succeeded, I bought $12.00 of cups of P… but, I’d love to be able to see my challenges.

I just finished my 365th day of writing here. A full year of daily writing, and it wouldn’t be possible without this place and all the work you’ve done to make it awesome. Thank you, Buster. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I read about this site in WORLD magazine while I was taking a creative writing class at college. Since signing up, I’ve used it as part journal, part story writer. It motivates me to get 750 words further on my fiction assignment for class, and it often helps me work through any mood I may have that’s keeping me from other schoolwork. With the volume of writing I do, in and out of school, I’ll probably keep using this site for the rest of my life, or at least as long as it lasts. With that in mind, even though I’m a poor college student, I’ve become a patron. Hopefully, I’ll be able to keep supporting this site throughout my use of it. It’s been great, not just for me, but for everyone who has to live with me. Keep up the wonderful work! ;)

750 Words and Morning Pages in general have made a huge impact on my life. It is now part of the daily routine and allows me to sift through all the garbage going through my brain. This clarity and momentum has allowed me to finish up my first manuscript and led to my first publishing contract. Thank you 750 Words!!

Hi Buster!
Sorry it has taken me 2 weeks longer to patronize this site than I intended. I am happy to say that I have not missed a day of writing in 39 days and I’m not donating because I lost the February challenge, I am writing because I am winner when I write every day. I can honestly say that I am on the road to completing a novel I have been dreaming of writing for years. I am glad I read about this in the New York Times in January. It has changed my life. I have been spreading the word about this awesome site.

Thank you for helping so many of us finally find our voices- Christine D

Exchange a cup (or ten) for a day away

I have a serious illness; one of the things that keeps me sane is trying to finish 750 words every day. I got to 73 days, and then I wrote 630 words yesterday (MARCH 1!!!) but never posted them (I just felt so sick). I never made it to 750. I’m just destroyed. Couldn’t we exchange a cup or two for a day away? It would mean everything to some of us.

Exchange a cup for a day away

I just finished writing my words this morning, and I am a bit sad. I am off for a few days in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, where I’ll have time to write, write, and write again. But there will not be internet access, and I will lose my streak. I love coming here every morning. I set up my alarm clock half an hour earlier, so that I can write before the kids get up. I find that my days are clearer when I come here, my writing project is advancing, my life is just better in general. But I will lose my streak, and that makes me sad.

So I wish that we could exchange a cup of patronage, in advance, for days that we know we will write but not be able to come here. And then when we come back, we simply copy our words back in the respective days, and then we don’t become an egg again… :)

I have never been one to stick with things. I get distracted, get frustrated, or just get distracted. 750 is simple enough and has good consistent reminders, so I have managed to hang in there for 91 days. I can taste my phoenix!

Now that I’ve achieved 30 days, a monthly challenge, and gotten both the hamster and the cheetah, the next badge I have to look forward to is 100 days of writing. So 70 days without a new badge? C’mon now. Achievements are the reason this site is so addicting from the start (and while writing is its own reward, there’s no reason not to help encourage people to continue writing with badges).

I’ve really come to like this site because it’s helping with my own personal challenge — to try to write a full length novel, one day at a time. I’ve done nanowrimo for two years, but I wanted to try to write outside of November. And so far, it’s been working out very well. I appreciate the daily reminders that are sent to my email as well as the easy format of the site — I can write at any time from any computer, which really increases my chances of getting my 750 words done. But my favorite features are the instantly updated word count and auto-save. Thank you, 750words, for helping me with my goals.

This site has done in four months what 25 years of therapy could not! Seriously, it is amazing how much you can work out by writing 750 words daily. I have kept a journal all my life until a few years ago when it just seemed typing took over writing by hand. Since finding this site it is just like keeping a daily journal only easier and whenever I am trying to work something out I know I can come here, write as much as I need without fear of anyone reading it but me. Such a great idea and I am ecstatic to have found this wonderful site!

I only start 750words a little more than a month ago, but I have yet to miss a single day. It’s a great, fantastic site that I seriously wonder why I haven’t used it before. Sure, I write plenty in a day, but I never get to sit down and just write something I want to write, or write to get something off of my chest. That’s what I use this site for. It’s like a journal, but different. It’s a way for me to keep track of myself and work my thoughts out. I can sit down and write however I want and know that no one will see it and judge me on it, because in the end it doesn’t matter. This is my de-stresser and without it my life would be a lot more complicated.

Buster, 750 words has helped me through a period of intense personal growth. My writing has been sporadic, but when I’ve needed to do it, 750 words has been there to help me get my head clear. I can’t say that I’ve written anything spectacular, but I have discovered that I can in fact write something.

Your hard work in putting together, and running 750 words is helping me towards my dream of being a writer. 10 months after finding this site through a friend, and I am now doing a creative writing course and loving my daily pages. ( I wish they were always morning pages, but they arent! )

Thankyou Buster. Your inspiration, ideas, execution and dedication have changed my life.

Patrick.

Because I have not been coming to this site to write, my writing has become sporadic. The remedy? Tomorrow is the 1st of March, my first writing challenge! Looking forward to earning my banana split (and not having to sing).

Being able to earn multiples of badges, so you can get like 2 of one, or 3 of another. You would not believe how motivational badges are (and I am a badge junkie, I will admit it here and now). That being said, I love, love, LOVE this site. Thank you!

Buster, I did it! I reached 200,000 words! I know that my 200 day streak ended a while back, during the last year, but even though I don’t write every day now, I am totally committed to my writing. I know that because I have this mindset about writing every morning (even though it isn’t EVERY morning just now) I will be able to accomplish what I need to when I am working on my dissertation during the next two years. Thank you for your website. Get on board, everybody who is sitting on the fence. This is a great resource.
PS if I ever really drank three cups of coffee, I would have to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance…or at the very least my house would have to be rebuilt…LOL

220 days in a row, and then I have one stupid distracted day where I simply forget. But my favourite thing about this site, since I started using it almost a year ago, is that it sucks to break a streak, but it is always so easy to open the site back up, and start writing again. From a pterodactyl to an egg —and with any luck, right back to a pterodactyl again.
