The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I love badges. Have I said how much I love badges? I do believe I have. Well. I would like badges for consecutive monthly challenge wins (different colored horses with numbers?) and for consecutive NaNoWriMo wins (matchy matchy with the Official Winner’s Badges from the OLL?) and higher than the pterodactyl badge for consecutive days written (no ideas this time, sorry). I love badges!

May 1st and I unintentionally blew a two month streak and the one month challenge on day one! I am celebrating rebirth as an egg with a gift of bounty to the remaining runners – good luck!

Due to circumstances I would rather not discuss at the moment, I decided a couple of months ago to delete my account here on 750 words. But then I missed it enormously and now I am back. Writing everyday had become a habit—a solid, positive way of coping with stress and sadness, especially during dark winter months here in the Pacific Northwest. I just couldn’t let it go in the end, and I’m sad that I can’t get back those entries that I rashly deleted. If you’re tempted to do the same, don’t do it! You’ll regret it later!

I started writing daily pages to deal with a very difficult break-up and fear of intellectual inadequacy. Over the past three years, I got kicked out of graduate school twice. I felt my writing was worth nothing more than a folio of pulpy personal history, or endless love letters never sent. And then I decided to write just for me. Not a blog, or an electronic letter, just writing to write. I have regained some confidence in my ability to focus – at least for 750 words, if not more – which has led to some very positive changes in my life. Thank you, Buster, for giving us all a private platform to address who, what, where, and why we communicate, especially within ourselves.

Vacation time!

Sometimes, even in the western world, our lives take us briefly out of range of free wifi. In these cases, it would be fabulous if we could write offline and copy/paste our words in later. Streaks would only be maintained if a) vacation time was booked in advance, b) sufficient words were posted to the site on our return and c) vacation time did not exceed 14 days within a year.

Sometimes it’s good to disconnect from the internet for a while and get back to nature… hey, maybe even revert to pen and paper for half an hour! I feel sad that anyone who does this has to sacrifice their writing streak :(

I haven’t written so consistently since I took a “gap year” in France. This has been a great way to journal, and I’ve found myself surprisingly motivated by the badges. I just got a turquoise horse for completing the 1 month challenge. The larger reward is knowing that—good or bad— I have written something for 30 days running.

Before I discovered this site, nothing I wrote was any good. But 750words taught me not to think too much, and just write whatever comes to my mind without stopping myself and screw the quality. I realized that my writers block came from being overly critical, and that just sucks the fun out of writing. Now I think writing is a bit more fun than it was before.

This is a bit self-serving as I’ve just completed 365 days of consecutive writing, but I would love to see a badge to acknowledge the one-year mark. I know there are a few other writers who got there before me, but it would be nice to have a new badge! On the other hand, making it this far is its own reward.

I just completed 365 days of consecutive writing here. When I started, that barely seemed possible. But now, writing my 750 words every day is just an important part of my routine. It helps me clear my head, recognize patterns and enhance my creative process. Thank you, Buster, for creating this wonderful community of writers.

Sometimes it takes a setback to help a person take a leap forward. Last month I blew a 349-day streak by totally forgetting to write my pages on March 15 (the Ides of March!). But when the April challenge started, I decided to up my total words per day to 1,000. I am happy to say that I have completed at least 1,000 words for each and every day of April. Anyone want to join me in May?
And as always: Thanks, Buster, for the site!

I have been writing all month of March and April, 61 days streak, and has helped me so much, I even became a better person, and a better writer. I am also painting watercolor and acrylic and this discipline has helped with my painting, and guess what, I will continue writing in the May Challenge. Yes!!!

I’ve just finished my 750+ words for the 30th day of April and it feels mighty good. I earned a Hampster and a Cheetah this month, so my list of badges is growing, giving me renewed incentive to persevere toward my Albatross and my first Flock. Alas, I will not earn my Turquoise Stallion this month because I was unable to get to a computer in time to finish my writing on the evening of Thursday the 14th. It’s a pity, but with this disappointment, has come some insight. The lesson learned, is that I need to make it a point to write in the MORNING, before the day can whisk me into it’s whirlwind. I am also finding that morning writing helps me map out my day, and that I emerge from my writing session with a greater sense of clarity regarding what I want to accomplish. Thanks so much, Buster, for this tool to keep me on track and centered. I have signed up for May and hope to make it all the way through. In fact, I plan to be celebrating with my very own Turquoise Horse on Memorial Day! I may be on the Wall of Shame this month, but I’m feeling pretty pleased with myself, nonetheless. Can’t wait to get started tomorrow morning on a new challenge! Good luck to everyone who will be trying again in the lusty month of May. May we ALL end up on the Wall of Awesomeness!

I’ve been telling myself for years to try to get back into the habit of morning pages. When I was in my early 20s I managed to do MP’s for about 2 months straight, and since then have never been able to stick with it. I’ve only been using this site for 4 days now, but I find that I’m far more likely to think of it first thing in the morning. The stats and metadata features add a level of interest and engagement, and the ambition to keep a streak going really feels motivating. I like it!

I have come to realise that I use this site as a mirror to tell me what’s going on inside my head and as I am an albatross right now the changes in thought patterns and subjects written about over the last three months have been quite diverse. In addition to this I now have loads of ideas and threads to develop into stories, articles, blogs or even a book. No poetry so far but I’m sure there is some in there somewhere. For all of this I have 750 Words and Buster to thank.

German text analysis

Most of the time I enjoy the web in english, but I write mostly in german.

Not very surprising the stats were a bit weird. My text was rated as sexual content and violence, mostly concerned about death. http://750words.com/entries/stats/720310

I am already thinking about writing in english, as I want to improve it.

It would still be nice if you could implement a german analysis. Depending on how complicated that is.

Secure server for writing

I’m on 16 day streak, thanks to the motivational elements built in this site. However, I’m writing from my couch after considering going to a coffee shop this morning. I did not write from that location because I don’t use any service that’s not secure over unsecured wifi, and even with secure servers, I’m a bit wary.

Buster, I hope you can find the time to make a secure server available for us. Thanks for the great work. I hope it becomes more profitable for you.

I practiced daily Morning Pages religiously when my daughter was first born and I needed a centering activity to guide me through newly-found fatherhood. This challenge has put me back in the routine of writing at a time my daughter is now 17, I’m nearing the end of my career as professor, and I feel the need for a rejuvenation. Thank you, 750words.com, for a fun and thoughtful way of reconnecting with my writing self!

My friend Katie told me about this website yesterday, and, for whatever reason, I waited until today to figure out what this whole thing is about. Sure enough, I was intrigued, and decided that I would make today Day One.

I’m really looking forward to using this as a creative tool in the future.

A rainbow of horses

I love my turquoise horse, earned for completing a monthly challenge. But… why stop at turquoise? Shouldn’t April give me a crimson horse? Can’t August be a maroon horse? A carnation pink horse in September? I intend to complete many months of challenge, and I would love to get a stable which runneth over.
