The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

More badges for accomplishments

I’ve already achieved most of the existing badges I’m likely to (since my original 80 day streak my longest has been about 20 days – I’ve given up any attachment – in the Buddhist sense – to getting the really long streak badges). But I continue to get a lot of personal value from 750words, and I get to it as often as possible. Perhaps some badges related to how long you’ve been writing (i.e., streaks of months versus days), or how many words you write – a prolixity badge. I now aim for > 1,000 per day, and to average > 1,000 per day for the month, even if I miss some days.

Blackberry App

It is the site in small on my Blackberry it does everything the site does just designed to work in miniature. I was away at the beginning of May and was so worried that I wasn’t going to be able participate in the month challenge I signed up for because of a lack of direct internet. I noticed though that my Blackberry was still able to connect yet it didn’t allow me to save my work through the browser. You could charge a yearly rate for the app like what’s app do. It would rock my world as I am always on the go and never too far away from my BB. BTW I still found a way to write and finished the month challenge this site rocks!

Stick with it! Don’t put off your writing for the day. That’s an easy way to fail the challenge.

I go to the gym two or three times per week to exercise my body and stay healthy. During the course of the One Month Challenge I did a while back, I started to look at 750 Words as a gym for my brain. It was sometimes hard to make myself go to this gym, but I always felt better after I did. The benefits are faster typing speed, more fluid thinking, better word recall, and the improved creative flow.

Writing consistently every day is my catalyst for change. It’s led to quitting smoking, quitting drinking, exercising more, meditating, and doing all the other things in my life I actually, really, want to do. Writing every day brings me insight into my own mind like nothing else can. I appreciate this site so so much. <3 Honey

I’m delighted to have completed the May challenge and now I’m aiming for the Phoenix. It surprises me how much the site and the badges encourage me to keep writing. It’s been very useful to process thoughts and ideas that have been rolling around my head in an entirely unstructured way. Writing seems to distill thought.

July is a splendid month. If you succeeded in writing 750 words a day for each of the 31 days, you will have written at least 23250 words – that’s nearly half a novel! Well done you.

adjustable writing space width

instead of fixed width on a daily writing session, let users set the width themselves, so that those who prefer to expand their browser to full screen can also write their words all across the screen. one benefit is that writers can use a large font and still see all 750 words on the screen without having to scroll up and down. another benefit is that writing in full screen removes distractions. or for people who keep several windows open at the same time, adjustable width would allow for a more narrow writing space so that people can consult other windows on their screen while writing at the same time.

I am so proud of myself for completing the May challenge. It was my first month-long challenge but it certainly won’t my last.
I am also proud to support such a rewarding and inspirational site. Thank-you Buster, it seems the internet can be a powerful force for good after all.

This was my promise should I complete the May One Month Challenge, which I am pleased to say I did. This has been a remarkable journey. Thank you for having created this site. The opportunity it has afforded me to organize my thoughts has led to greater creativity and productivity in other areas of my life. I’m happy to be able to share this bounty with others.

I have become a person that thinks more before acting or saying things since I have wrote that morning about it before it actually happens..
… or I write at nights what I did not like what happened that day..
.750words is the tool to analyze my day to day activities and helps me to become a better person.

Offline writing

I’m an albatross again (yay!) after losing my phoenix to traveling, where I didn’t have access to the internet for a couple of weeks. Someone suggested an Evernote-style program that syncs with the server next time you get online. I like this idea.

Share your 750 words

I don’t know exactly, but I am curious about how other people use 750- what does everybody write about every night? I would like to see a feature where people have the option of sharing their output on a given day.

Well, May was mostly a bust for me as I skipped days and forgot others so I am back to try again to get moving for June. Since I was so out of it for May, I want to send a little more to charity…

I just finished the May Monthly Challenge. I’m feeling terribly accomplished and fantastically good about myself, so here’s a cup raised to my fellow finish-liners, and to those who didn’t quite make it, and to everyone who’s signed up for next month. :)

Improve the writing page

I haven’t searched around in the forums, so excuse me if this has already been addressed. But I would like the option to separate my journal-keeping from any fiction writing I do. Although I find it interesting to read the stats about my fiction (what I’m concerned about, etc.), I don’t like that it mixes overall with my journal entries. Can we give our writing a simple label?
Otherwise, I love the site. I didn’t finish the first day I started and have gone for 49 straight days since. Or is it 45?
I do get too competitive and caught up in my WPM. I wish I could cut that feature off in my brain at times, slow down and create. But I usually can’t.
Thanks for the encouragement to write,
Jeff

Sheez, I’ve worked through some really bad writing here, and it’s been a lifesaver. I’ve also untangled a few piles of emotional coat hangers by just showing up and puking on the page.

Thanks Buster for a terrific, simple tool to do the thing that writers fear the most: TO WRITE.

More badges for accomplishments

With my gaming that I do, I’ve become a bit of an achievement nut. I try to get every single one the game has to offer. Needless to say that when I saw all the badges I could get from here when I signed up, I thought “challenge accepted” I suppose if more badges were to be added I would personally have more increments to the writing streaks. The first three were pretty good but after you get to 30 days, it seems like a rather daunting task. Not that validation is the only thing driving me to write, but splitting the difference between some of the larger gaps may be reassuring.

An iPhone/iPad app

It’d be nice for an iPhone/iPad app because in the event that I forget to write in the morning or if I get side tracked, I can at least write at work on my iPad. The only thing I’m skeptical about is if it would actually register. I’d be kind of bummed if I entered something on the app and it didn’t transfer over which then made me miss a day. But I’d definitely consider buying it if it was a paid app.

Monthly Challenge and/or Day Streak Forgiveness

Okay, I know I’m not the only person here who has felt absolutely TERRIBLE when they miss a day in either the Monthly Challenge or just in general and instantly, there goes that X amount of days streak. Sometimes, real life gets in the way and it’s out of our control.
With that said, I suggest that there be a feature implemented for this site to “forgive” us for missing a single day. Only one, lest people take advantage! So whether the “punishment” to make up for the previous day be writing double or triple the usual word amount and/or offering the chance to donate a set amount of $ even to erase that one day mistake, it would most certainly be lovely.
Anyway, that’s my suggestion for the month… a month I was signed up for the Monthly Challenge and that I missed by a single day with only three days in May left! Ouch…
