The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I have a tradition now: A morning iced coffee in my pajamas and 20 minutes of writing. Right now I am deciding whether to take a new job with a 100% raise but a lot of life transition, or stay in my stable job and focus on non-work arenas. Big decision, lots of words every day as I seek my truth for the next decade. This process is invaluable.

This site has helped discipline my writing. Though I often don’t get to it until late in the afternoon, I always have something rattling around in my brain that I want to put into words. By the time I get to sitting in front of the keyboard, I’m ready and raring to go. I’m using the site to further a story idea set at the turn of the century. 1900. During the day I do some research so that by the time I’m ready to write, I have a focus. Works for me!

I raise my cup to this site. I have found that I can write nonsense, sadness, joy, and humor all in one day if the feeling strikes me. It helps me think, and I can start or end my days with a clear head. Thank You!!

The daily ritual of emptying my thoughts into my keyboard has been soothing my brain for a month now. I have never considered myself much of a writer, but having a white screen as my audience really takes the pressure off. Thanks so much for this amazing site!

250words.com for kids?

Summer is here and I thought a version of this site would be a great thing for my kids who like writing, are learning how to type, and enjoy earning badges.

Have you considered a site with smaller word targets, or even letting people choose their word target when they sign up, and/or adjust them under their settings?

Thanks for such a great site!

Automatic Exporting of Entries

It’d be great if Buster told some robot to automatically email me an export of my entries every few days or every week as a backup. I love that I can export easily and do my own backups; it’d be even better if this process was automated.

Thanks for all the work Buster!

I’ve been enjoying this site for going on 48 days; it does indeed get the cobwebs out, make it easier to focus on the day’s issues and problems and get me thinking more logically. I almost blew my streak yesterday just because it got too close to midnight, and that make me feel more anxious than I’ve felt in a while! So thanks, 750words, for not only giving me a place to empty out my brain, but also for hooking me to an obviously dangerously addictive daily habit. You’re awesome. ^^

Getting back into writing my morning pages has been immensely satisfying. Just doing the work is reward enough, but I love, love, LOVE 750 Words! It’s an incredibly easy and convenient way to write, and the incentives make it fun to keep those streaks going. 750 Words is well worth a few bucks a month of patronage. If you’re using it, please support it!

Assurance that Buster doesn't read these things

All I want is an item in the FAQ or somewhere, where Buster promises he won’t look at any of entries, or that our entries are encrypted or something. I think this won’t be possible because then he can’t debug things that go wrong on entries, but I really can’t shake the feeling that maybe he looks at our entries sometimes (just innocently, in the course of maintaining the database or something). Please, Buster, I want some peace of mind.

Cups of Amnesty

For each of the “bigger” levels you attain – like, say albatross and up – you earn a cup of amnesty with each level gain. Or you could exchange three months of wall of awesome status for a cup of amnesty, as well (or more, or less; fiddle with the ratio if you need to), which would give people even further incentive to do the one-month challenges. And each cup of amnesty will allow you to “buy forgiveness” for a missed day. They should be very rare so you don’t make it too easy to miss and just get forgiveness, but I think it would be a really good idea so that someone who has 200+ days streak doesn’t have to start over completely from zero for missing a single day.

This site and the encouragement of the badges has really helped to inspire me to write. I sit at work in the mornings, type my words, and feel more clear headed about the day. I have been wanting to make this a habit for a long time now, but there is something about the possibility of the reward of an abstract, cyberspace animal badge that keeps me going.

I love this site, and want to make sure it keeps going. It helps me to not only clear my brain, but to find insights that otherwise get lost in the business of life.

Something that would let us write online or off. Then update our stats when we next connect. I often go on a writer’s retreat someplace there is no Internet( gasp!). You’ve got me hooked now and I don’t want to miss a day!

More metadata in export

The current Export feature, which spits out a month’s worth of entries as a single .txt file, is great. I end up using it a lot, as I keep every single journal entry I’ve ever written on my computer (and backed up, of course!) in an application called MacJournal. The feature, as it currently exists, keeps track of number of words written, as well as time writing, but I think it would be great if it included the start time (as in, from the day stats page, “writing started at xx:xx and proceeded thusly”) as well. I used to keep track of start times and end times when I did journaling on my own prior to using this site, and, while I could load every single stat page to tag my entries manually, it would save some time if this data were available on export.

Improve Social Networking Capabilities

Dear Seven Hundred Fifty Words,
I suggest that we create a way to announce your day’s statistics on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. The format would look like RunKeeper but announcing words written instead of miles run. We would still keep the words private similar to how we don’t actually watch our friends run when they announce it on Facebook (unless you’re Claire from work and yes I’m the guy in the parked Chevy Malibu out front.)
Sincerely,
Mark Zuckerberg

Improved export feature

Love, love, love the site! Thanks for providing a place to leave all my baggage so I can move on with my day unencumbered.

I’d love to be able to export my words to something a little more manageable (and prettier) than a .txt document. I’m not sure my words are something I’d want to leave for posterity, but it would be nice to have the option.

Thanks again!

Even though there are days that I struggle with writing the words, I am always glad when I have finished. There is a tangible satisfaction in my soul to know that I am able to faithfully keep this commitment to myself. Thanks again, Buster, for the site and all the work you do to keep it interesting for us!

To all those people embarking on a One Month Challenge, I say DO IT and KEEP AT IT.
I did the One Month Challenge in May and not only has it got me into the habit of writing every day it also helped to clear my mind, lift my mood and lighten my soul. All this from a little bit of writing every day!
As a busy stay at home mum of two under 3, doing my words is a moment of calm and reflection in a manic day.
Thank-you to Buster for a truly inspirational site

That’s roughly one cup for every week I’ve been doing this. I started in April, where I was going through an emotional rough patch, and found it really helped to write out my feelings every day in this private sphere. Then my words saw me through the stress of finals and procrastination, and finally, my crazy May writing goal.

This site has really helped me out in so many ways, especially through using the metadata. I struggle with depression and bipolar, so I created a mood metadata from the start, and every day I note how I feel—this means I can now see my various ups and downs across a range of 53 days. Combined with the journaling I do every day for my 750 words, I’ve started to see patterns and noticed things that seem to affect my moods. Because of this, I’ve begun to make some changes to my lifestyle—such as having a more consistent sleeping schedule, and eating better and more often—to better regulate my mood without medication.

I’ve noticed a definite improvement in mood overall since starting at this site. It really does help to write out your feelings and dig into your subconscious a bit every day, and I’ve recommended this site to any and all of my friends who struggle with similar disorders. Thank you, Buster, for giving me a good reliable way of achieving my longtime journaling and mood tracking goal!
