The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Buster, I missed out on completing my 750 words yesterday by 6 minutes. I had spent too long in the grocery story at 11 p.m deciding what kind of cake mix to buy and didn’t leave myself enough time to complete my entry before midnight. Like Cinderella I was hoping against hope that the dreaded 12 would stay its chiming for a few moments longer. Alas, your fail safe mechanism kicked me out at something less than 600 words. So I got picked up where I left off and got Sunday’s writing done at 12:25 a.m.

I love the motivation 750Words gives me. THANKS.

If you, random person in the internets ether, have been umm-ing and ahh-ing about 750 words, let me make the decision for you – sign up, now.

Everything from the simple but beautifully elegant interface counting up to your 750 words through to the statistical analysis of your own 750 word brain dump has been a real treat.

I have tried Julia Cameron’s written version of the morning pages, but never kept up with it- thanks to 750 words, I am on a nine day streak. More importantly, I have started to make some shifts in my own life based on what I have written and how I have sorted out my brain. Good life shifts and insights. Who wouldn’t want those? (Well, maybe those of the curmudgeonly persuasion. I am sure 750 words will help them to be more bitter and jaded, if that is their goal).

I am glad to be a patron and will continue to raise my cup(s) of patronage to 750 Words in the future.

I’m so grateful for 750words! This site has helped me regain confidence with regards to my ability to just get words down on a page and clear my head of clutter. It’s a fantastic resource, and one I’ve been recommending to my friends. Thanks!

An iPhone/iPad app

I’m planning to use iPad as a laptop replacement for everything besides software development. (I am probably insane.) Though 750Words is usable in the browser, a custom app would be pretty great.

I am so glad to have found 750 words. Buster makes the coolest stuff that makes me think about what I’m doing and keep track of it.
Reflection is wonderful and now that I have a space that isn’t public, but is available and will give me all sorts of statistics it’s getting my creative juices flowing and resulting in doing more stuff both publicly and privately.
Thanks and cheers!

Buy Back!

I would like to be able to buy my way back into the Monthly Challenge. Like say a drunk bee totally monopolized my day, I could trade you some lattes for a little amnesty. I seriously fear the Wall of Shame. You should exploit that for money. : )

Years ago I used to write every day, but I fell out of the habit, especially since I wrote online and found myself having to censor what I was really feeling. It was something I missed a lot, but nothing I’d tried had gotten me back into the habit.

Today is the start of week four. The motivation of seeing things x-ed off, the badges, watching the word counter increase and wondering how fast I can get to 750 words today and what my total will be when I’m done – all of that has helped me keep up with it.

Thank you for helping me find my words again.

Though I’ve missed a few days on the site due to travel/connectivity issues, I did my own offline journaling on those days and this site’s gotten me into the habit of writing at length every single day. It’s worked so well that this month I challenged myself to do 1000 words a day. It was a success! Next month it’ll be 1250 :) Thanks so much Buster!

The site’s awesome, obviously, but yesterday I got a distraction ding because my internet connection and/or browser went flaky. I posted on the support site, and less than 24 hours later Buster fixed the problem!

I’m very impressed with all the support / features / updates …basically everything Buster brings to the site and community.

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

"Too Write" List

A quick note of what to write about the following day or in the near future.

Maybe you have read or thought of something later that day you want to journal about. Log into the website, and type it in real quick as reminder to explore those thoughts the next day.

Another implementation involves sending a message, i.e. an email or text, to your 750words.com account and have the list without having to login. This would open the door for mobile updates.

What do you think of the name? It’s intended to be a play on “To-do” lists while at the same time connotating more writing.

Transfer account option

I’d love to be able to decouple my account from Facebook and transition it to my Google account. I’m trying to close my Facebook account and this is one of the last sites that has me tied to it. Think that will ever be a possibility?

Thanks so much for this site! I generally like to keep my writing on paper and pen, but who am I kidding, this is so much easier for someone who moves around as much as I do and it’s so much more fun! I’m majoring in engineering and mathematics so it’s really cool to write and also see an analysis of my writing. Thanks again, and keep it up!

I came across this site on March 10th and started to use it not too frequently. But honestly … now I realize how much 750words help me to clear my head and figure out stuff about myself. My psychiatrist couldn’t help me half as much as this website already did. I just use it as some sort of diary but I just realized again how much better I feel after making my entry and how I see things more clearly… So yeah. Thank you so much for this website!

Multilingual words analysis

The language pattern analysis, displayed for the words of each day, seems to be based on English language references.
Although I can write fluently in English, I choose to write my words in French, my native language. The current analysis algorithm still does a somewhat decent (as in, not completely random) job.
I would like to be able to choose for each day the language to perform semantic analysis. Still better, the language could be recognized automatically.

I don’t consider myself a writer by any means. I’ve completed just a handful of days here and I’m enjoying it immensely. I’ve found that I really look forward to clearing my head, and when I’m done I want to write more, so I head over to my blog and let it spill out there. Thanks for creating such a great space.

I’ve gone through the Artist’s Way trip a couple of times, keeping up with the morning pages during the twelve weeks, but never really enjoying it, and the habit never stuck around for very long afterward. 750 words has hit the sweet spot in my stubborn brain to actually get me to do my daily brain-dump writing in a way that pen and paper couldn’t. So, hooray for that!

Another 750 words written today. I can’t think of a better testimonial than that.

Testimonial Note from Jack Baty on Mon, Mar 22

In January, I started writing because it seemed like fun, and anytime I’ve taken a Buster idea and run with it, it has made my life better. Things were rocky and weird and I was tired of unloading everything on hapless bystanding friends.

And along came a love affair with 750words. I’ve been preaching the gospel to anyone who’ll listen, anyone whose brain is too noisy to get things done, writers, artists, office people, students, everyone.

I’ve missed two days since then — one in the beginning, before I realized The Gravity Of Said Decision, and one in February’s Challenge, which was crushing. But every day I write, I take the mental chatter down a notch. And that, to me, is a gift more precious than I knew I could give myself every single day.

Plus, it’s gotten me in the habit of being early for work, so I can sit down and write first thing. I’d been trying every trick in the book for that one, but it was 750words, of all things, that made it happen.
