The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Improve the writing page

It would be nice to be able to label entries, whether at the time of writing or later on. With all the days in a month that we write, it’s hard to have to go through them one by one if there was something in an earlier entry we want to revisit. Or even if it was just a “Star” or “Favorite” or “Important” mark, just to be able to distinguish certain entries that might be more important or useful.

Just finished my first monthly challenge. I took it on in my busiest month (in my personal life) so that I could prove to myself that I am committed to my writing! About half-way through, I signed up to NaNoWriMo. I finally feel ready to take on that big challenge! August was a great trial run. Good luck to the september challengers!

Titles

I often jump on this site when I need something to read and go through my past days. I’d love to be able to title the day’s worth of words so that I can easily find what I’m looking for, as I often write bits from two or more different stories in one day or write the same story but completely different scenes on different days. And if I could title my posts, I wouldn’t have to click on everything just to see what it is!

I think it would be best if titles are kept somewhat separate from the day’s words, not only so they don’t count as part of the day’s words but also so I can go back and edit them on other days.

750 words has helped me to clear my mind of its clutter, daily. I’m able to get all the ‘junk’ down in words and make some sense of it. It helps me to figure out what I need to take care of that I was possibly neglecting before. It’s a great way to start my day!

This past month I’ve used 750 words as a sort of “brain-organizer,” and not on purpose. I mean, I started with really no expectations of how it would go. In fact, I started out venting… quite venomous was my first post, actually, because my first post occurred during some drama with certain drama-inducing family members. ‘Nuff said. But over the course of the month I found myself making decisions and creating plans, on 750 words, and so I feel the practice has been extremely helpful. And that’s why I’m back for another month o’ goodness! Thank you for this site, Buster. Enjoy your coffee.

OK, I want everyone to know I have been writing every day since the beginning of March. This means my 184 days streak, or 5 months… I am close to the 200 days badge, and the 200,000 words in a flock badge, so I am really happy.
Thanks Buster. My practice is what is important now.
I am from Mexico, and even though I am bilingual since I was 12, when I studied one year in a boarding school in New York, and I have always studied english grammar, my writing has improved so much,
now I really feel I can write a novel.

So many times writing my pages ends up being a brain dump of all sorts of odds and ends—memories to save, dreams to record, feelings and emotions (often yucky ones) that just need to be expressed and looked at. And without the discipline of this venue, those things would continue to clog up my thinking and keep me wandering through the processing and reprocessing cycle. Thank you, Buster!

750 Words has really helped to make a positive change in my life. Writing out my thoughts every day in journal form has helped me to get organized, clear my head and learn to think more positively. It’s fun to check my stats after I write and see how my WPM has improved or see how my mental state is changing day to day. I look forward to writing every day now and I’m eager to beat September’s challenge!

I’d love to be able to separate types of writing in a single day’s entry. For example, if I write 500 words of fiction, then 300 words of random journal-like babbling in the same day, I’d love to be able to put them in separate categories so that they aren’t lumped together on the same page. Even better if categories can get their stats analyzed independently of other categories, so I can see stats on “fiction” versus “journal”. If the user can define the category (or choose to have only the default single category), so much the better – one could manage various writing projects (short story anthology, ongoing novel, nonfiction project, journal, etc) that way.

I’ve nearly finished one of the one month challenges but after failing my second one I quit writing for the rest of the month. Now, I’m starting again on the September challenge and thus decided to donate to the next bounty pool, as sort of an incentive to continue writing throughough both months. What would be a better way to spend a couple of units of money?

Oh my god. I just completed 50,000 words for the month. I woke up this morning with almost 6000 words to go to get to that mark, and then I just did it. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have a complete draft of one book, and just wrote half a short story today to get to 50,000. I can honestly say that reaching that magic number on your word counter made me write that much today. I don’t know if I should shout in joy or tell myself that I am a complete idiot for not being able to do this without a crutch. But maybe using this crutch, I will learn to walk.

Put streak on hold

I’m going away for the Christmas holidays, and during that period I know I’m definitely not going to be able to write. I know many people have suggested ways of writing offline and then syncing or uploading at a later date, but why not just be able to put a streak ‘on hold’? I really don’t want to have to break my streak because I’m going somewhere where I won’t be able to access the internet or whatnot. And to prevent abuse of the system, maybe it would use one cup of patronage for each day? You do get them from winning monthly challenges after all, yet another incentive to write every day =)

I sat down and wrote every day in August. I have 35000 words to show for it. Thank you so much for creating a site where I’m free to just write. I’m looking forward to my first official monthly challenge!

I know it shows up in reminder emails, but I’ve gotten so into the habit of writing every day that the emails have become more of a nuisance than anything else, so I’ve turned them off. Now I can’t seem to find a place that tells me what I’ve promised myself if I succeed in this month’s challenge =P

Years ago, I was a freelance journalist whose whole identity and self-worth was wrapped up in being a writer. Eventually, I got burnt out and stopped writing. About a year ago, I had the urge to write again, but always feared that I couldn’t.

Not only that, after spending years surfing the Web, my attention span was shot. It was difficult for me to focus long enough to start and finish any writing project.

It took me less than a month of being on this site to restore my confidence and love of writing. I have proven to myself I can write and I can focus. I feel like I have plugged back into an important part of me that I had neglected for too long. It has changed everything for me.

Not only do I write here, I am working on a non-fiction book, 750 words at a time. Also, my goal is to be ready for NaNoWriMo. Feeling that meaningful sense of accomplishment has also inspired me to start exercising daily as well.

Buster, thank you so very much for creating this site. You have my undying gratitude. Also, thanks to everyone who uses this site and posts notes. It’s been cool sharing this experience with all of you.

Twice so far I have been at work blah-blah-blahing away at something while trying to get my fingers moving to get my brain moving when suddenly out of nowhere comes a neat little fiction! One is so-so, the other mind-blowingly good and insightful. So keep at it—if it has not yet happened to you it will! Thank you, 750words, for showing me what’s possible by just typing!
