The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I am on my 190 day streak, and One more month, yes, more words, aiming to the 200 words badge pretty soon, and it feels great.
Thanks Buster.

I love this site and the difference it is making in my focus and clarity. I remember now why I used to journal daily, and am so incredibly thankful to Buster for creating an online tool that allows me to journal anywhere and at anytime, as long as there is internet. (:

750words has given me a new found sense of focus. I feel like I begin my day with accomplishing a goal. It really clears my mind for the day and I love it! I feel more organized. I really love the cool badges, too! These are nice little incentives to keep you going. I’m always wondering, “When am I going to get my next badge? What will it be for? Ooh!” Thanks 750! (And I am officially a dork) Boom!

I didn’t know what I’d think of 750 words at first but here I am 100 days later and still going strong. I find that just letting go and pounding out words without thinking too much has really transpired some aha moments for me. And anything that gets me writing is a good thing.

More badges for accomplishments

I didn’t think I would care, but I really enjoy the badges. However, once you get to a certain point they are few and far between. I would like to see a few more badges for accomplishments.

This site has saved my writing and my sanity. I’ve had quite a few technical glitches along the way, but I’m not letting them discourage me. This provides a sense of accomplishment even on the days I can’t manage to work on my fiction projects, and that’s become very important to me. Thanks to all who keep this site running.

I think it’s sort of cool that we get these for winning challenges, and since at this point I’m honestly too broke to donate anything even though I’d sort of like to, I can contribute these back instead for now.

More badges for accomplishments

I think there should be more short-term badges. Maybe a 50 day badge or 150 day badge or new behavior badges like the cheetah or hamster but maybe a badge for being positive or a badge for writing multiple times after the first 750 words are written. I’m just throwing some random ideas out there. Short term goals help keep people motivated for long term ones. I’ve only been here for a month and a half and now it seems like the badges I want to get will take a dramatically longer time to get now than before. I’m scared I may give up out of impatience. Perhaps I won’t, but more badges would definitely mean more writing and more goal making.

Actually, what I really wanted was 750words integration with healthmonth. But there wasn’t an existing feature suggestion for that. A badge between 100 days and 200 days would be good too.

Aside from the NaNoWriMo contest, there’s also a 3-Day Novel Writing Contest that’s also a good idea. Maybe add that?

Writing on 750 Words has been a fantastic experience for me, especially during the one month challenge when I had to make myself remember to write daily – I didn’t want to end up on the Wall of Shame!
This site has enabled me to clear my mind on so many occasions and, as a result, it has meant less real life arguments with the person/people who have been the source of some kind of frustration. For example, I have had times when my boyfriend and brother have annoyed me, these times have then become the fuel for my 750 words for the day. In writing this, though, it has given me the chance to vent and get everything out of my system so I do not take it out on either of them in person. It has drastically reduced the stress and anger I have felt in the past and this can only be a good thing – I was getting to a stage where I was unhappy with the person I was before using this website as a verbal punching bag… Thankyou for creating it and sharing it with people like me, it really has been a great help to me over the past couple of months :)

750words has been my saving grace. I use to journal all of the time and had stopped several years ago. Instead of getting my thoughts out, they’ve stayed jumbled in my head, which has been worse since switching jobs and having more to think about. 750words is my pensieve (think Dumbledore in Harry Potter). It allows me to dump all of my thoughts out, which then provides me the opportunity to swirl them around and make sense of them. I owe my sanity to 750words.com!

On-going writing

I would love to see a feature of some sort for those of us who want to do continuous and edited writing. I would love to have the accountability of 750words to work on my book, but instead of having to write something in 750words that is disconnected from the writing in my word document and that saves and is un-editable the next day, I’d like to have my entire book (word doc) loaded in the site and be able to edit and write on it each day…then have 750words track the changes, additions, and progress each day so I know how much time I spent on my writing, how many words I added, and things like that. For whatever reason, the badges in 750 really work as great little incentives. An additional component for editable writing…or maybe it’s a different site…I believe would help those of us writers who want/need to do more than journaling (even though I love that and will definitely continue that as well!) Thanks so much for creating this site!! (I’ve just started on www.healthmonth.com as well)

Sometimes writing is just hard. But, the only way to make it easier is to do it. That may be why writing is such a conundrum for so many people. Because, it’s easy to write. We do it all the time. But, to write well, to communicate truly, completely, to pour an image and an idea and an emotion from one mind to another is so sublime, so fickle, so unpredictable as to be like catching strands of silk in a hurricane with a pair of tweezers. That might be part of the reason why writers, true writers, those who pursue the craft with lifelong dedication, seem to be a little odd, a little different from “normal” people. And there’s only one way to find out if you’re one of those kinds of people: get out there, strap yourself to a tree, super glue your tweezers to your thumb and forefinger and wait for the winds to blow. 750 words at a time.

index/title/metadata

I want to second a version of Michele Howarth’s idea for titles. You might think that the search function would be enough for me, but it’s surprising the number of times (even in my two months of using the site) that I’ve had to read through quite a few days before finding the particular brainstorm session I remembered typing in here – often because I didn’t include the title of the story, etc, that I was working on…

Usually after a day or two I can read something over and have a better grip on what it was really about. So it would be nice to have a metadata/indexing/title/keyword field on each entry that I could edit after the day ends. Maybe even with the option of a keyword cloud on the month stat page?

Thank you so much for this site. Every day, I can’t wait to write my 750 words.
