The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

This site has been my only friend on some days when I needed to clear my head most. It is a listening ear and does not give opinions or pass judgement. It helps me think through my own thoughts, and I could not be more grateful. Thank you, 750 words.

If I use my four cups of patronage for this note, will four cups be added to the bounty next month, or only one?
Anyhow, from the bounty, back to the bounty. Salud!

improvements to editor & exported archive

I’m a little confused on how the text editor works… it doesn’t preserve a single return, only a double? Couldn’t it maybe also recognize a single enter space? (it would be very helpful when I’m trying to make lists – and when I’m leaving my metadata. I’ve had my metadata messed up several times because I didn’t realize that it would run lines together if I didn’t put a double return/enter after each one.)

More importantly, how about the exported archives? They’re kind of a visual disaster – no line breaks at all? I know it’s possible… another site I use (ohlife.com) exports with line breaks (at least the double returns) included. I would be very pleased if it could do the same here.

Thanks so much for this site.

Holidays from the Internet

On Saturday 8th October I begin a week’s holiday from the Internet. I will continue to write 750 words a day. But because I won’t be able to post to this site, when I return to Internet access on Saturday 15th October, I’ll have to start again from the very beginning. If I could book a scheduled Holiday From The Internet, to be paid for on my return by 750w*days absence, I could keep my Streak … which is at over 130 days and I’d love to hit 200 one of these days!

In the words of Milton, “He who would not be frustrate of his hope to write well hereafter in laudable things ought himself to be a true Poem.”
Thanks, 750, for getting me that much truer in my Word.

An iPhone/iPad app

I have both iDevices, and while I can use the mobile site on them, it doesn’t operate particularly cleanly. I’d pay to download a mobile site.

Improve the writing page

Here’s a (minor) annoyance I have with the writing (and archived writing) pages: the title for the writing page is “Write your words”, which is fine, but that happens to also be the title for viewing past days’ writing we can’t edit. How about having the title for those pages be “Your words for the (day) of (month), (year)”? That way, when I open a bunch of tabs with past days to refer back to, there’s more clear information about which tab has what day on it, and only the current one will be telling me to “write” in it.

In addition, being able to toggle on/off displaying the Markdown formatting on the words pages, both current and past, would be nice too.

A better mobile site

I just wrote my first 750 words, yay! I’d love a better mobile site, but thanks for this one. I’m excited to keep writing.

750words has changed my life. I have written over 300,000 words since starting almost a year ago and this has transformed my ideas of the possible. I has influenced every aspect of my life and work. I am very thankful.

I now write. That is what I do, and that makes me a writer.

It is not that I want to write – someday.

I write – now.

It is something that I crave, and thanks to 750 Words, it has become a habit, I have even rearranged my life to fit my “Morning Pages” in to my schedule. I love to stay up late, but I now go to bed around 9PM so that I can get up at 4AM to write.

I can’t imagine not writing.

I’m a writer. It is what I do.

Thank you, 750 Words – Peter

More badges for accomplishments

I have just completed my second Challenge, and I have been thinking that it would be nice to have a badge for every challenge that´s completed. For example, the first badge has a grey border, the second a will have blue one, the third a red and so on.

More text analysis

I love using this site, but I think it would be even more enjoyable if my texts could be analyzed in my native tongue, Dutch.

I can’t say for certain how it has affected me because I just started 2 weeks ago. That being said, so far I have fallen into a routine where, no matter what, I get up and have at least one accomplishment a day. I get to say, yep, the rest of the day may have been completely unplanned and I didn’t get to do what I had intended, but I did do my words. Check, double check, and check-a-roonie!!

Retroactive meta data tagging

First, thanks Buster. I love this site. Second, I figured out how to use the metadata function months after I started using the site, and it would be ideal to go back and enter meta data tags in the earlier entries so I can track all the ideas for my novel that I’ve generated while on this site. Third, thanks again! This is a fun way to do morning pages.

I began using 750 words as a way to get myself back into blogging without censor or care and I’m so glad I did. I have a personal challenge to never miss a day because I have found that it really helps me, A LOT. It helps me clear my mind and think more clearly. It gives me a reason to be typing and saying things that I might otherwise keep bottled inside. Thank you for this site. Thank you for everything you have done for my writing. And even though I sometimes find it a pain, I am always glad that I do it, when I am done. Every one else should do this as well, and your goals might be different and that’s okay. No one writer is the same!

This site has been an incredible gift. Having a terminally ill mother while in college is not easy to deal with. But because I have been writing for almost 200 days, consecutively, I have been able to relieve my mind. I am not only a better writer, but a better communicator. Having the ability to unleash your mind daily is incredibly healthy! So, I am celebrating with 20 cups!

I am just getting back to writing after a summer off and I am realizing how much I missed being able to literally dump all my thoughts out on to a page where I can do with them what I will. Thanks for still being here, 750 words, when I was able to return.

I have to say, this is one of the finest time I’m so proud of myself. Since many years ago reading “The Artist’s Way”, I said I want to do my morning page daily, which is to really just sit down, and write 750 words. Of course I failed for many years. Starting and stop, restarting and failing. Along the way, I lose faith, in my writing and in myself. Today, I finally live up to my words. I actually completed my One Month Challenge. laugh Still now, I don’t know what prompt me to do it in the first place. I remembered when I signed up, I was so afraid. I was hesitated, and the worst of all, I doubted myself. “Can I? Can I really do this? I always say I want to do this, do that…. But I never complete my stuff…” The reason I always avoid the challenge is, I don’t want to fail. I don’t want to appear on the Wall of shame. I feel ashamed. Most of all, I am afraid to fail. So the best way not to fail?—— Don’t do anything at all! Haha. Of course this already marks the failing… … I’m sure all of us have dreams to fufill in this lifetime. Dreams we may have ever since as a little child, perhaps. Dreams we don’t just want them to live in our head, we want them alive, real, now, in our life. The thing is, YES. They can come true, when you take action, when you say, “I’ll write.” It doesn’t matter how much, or how long, or even how good we are. The very thing is, do it. Write. What is the dream you always want to do? Write. Write it down, write it all down, especially the very one you are so fearful of, the one you believe it’s not you who can. Write. So for those who actually did take the challenge and ended up in the Hall of shame…. Don’t give up! You’re already very brave, and you’re good enough. Take the challenge again and I’m sure one day, the daily writing is one of your habit. If some lazy bums like me can do something, and actually able to learn to be disciplined, I’m sure all of you can do it even more, and much, much better than me. Thank you, 750words. You prove to me that I can achieve anything I want, when I put my heart, mind, body and soul into it. Even just 1% is enough. Most of all, I fall in love with writing all over again. I want to take One Month Challenge again in November. I want to write forever. Thank you. :)
