The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Stats Reset Button

I would like to be able to click a button and clear all of my stats, rather than deleting my account. When I first joined 750 words it was on the 2nd day of a month, so for ages I had a little statistic telling me I’d participated in all but 1 day since joining. It just gnawed away at me. I couldn’t stand seeing that I only had 99% participation, when in fact I’d participated in every day since the day I’d joined.
Now, since that time, I’ve been struggling with depression symptoms and actually completely fell off of the November challenge wagon. It hurts me every time I see how low my stats have dropped. Of course, I’d love to keep my badges, but I wouldn’t mind losing them to wipe the slate clean and start fresh.
Perhaps it’s just me, but seeing how much I failed in certain areas, makes me feel more discouraged rather than motivated. For me, it would really be nice to just wipe the stats clean and start over. I’m tempted to delete my account to achieve that, but I’m sure that an easier method could be installed.

This is to celebrate the fact that I didn’t loose my streak even though we spent Thanksgiving Day and night with NO internet connection.

I “prewrote” my words and trained a friend to post them for me on TG Day. And THIS time it worked!
ba-ba-da-bing!

Better Explanation of Categories

First, I love this site so much because it is the first tool that has helped me remain on track. I love the breakdown of categories – affectionate, etc. But I’d love to get so more info — what is about my writing that make me come up affectionate so much even when I think i’m spewing hate onto the page? Why is my predominant sense the sense of touch? As a data whore, I love the categories and the badges, but I would like a little more info behind them so I can see a little more deeply into myself.

Improve the writing page

I use Safari on Mac OS X and when writing, the footer always slips a bit below the page fold. That way, I cannot see my stats while writing. No big deal, just slightly annoying. And hopefully fast to fix?

For over a year, I’ve failed miserably at trying to recuperate my journaling habit on paper, knowing that opening a word document wouldn’t inspire me and would feel too much like work. And then I found 750 words. My jumbled thoughts about a tumultuous time have been forming into something productive; my sense of belonging to this beautiful community of eggs and birds and, somewhere back in there, humans has grown; my commitment to growing possibilities has blossomed.

On this Thanksgiving day, I want to say, “Thanks, Buster.” And to any who have not read the Patronage page explanation, it’s a great thing to do.

Peace, writing, and health to all!

More badges for accomplishments

I am surprised and sort of hate to admit that the badges inspire me! They make it fun. They feel like something I can accomplish that is secret and for me. I would like more badges, exspecially between 30 day streak and 100 days.

Streak mender

The important thing to learn from streaks and breaks is that one’s success is related to how quickly one is able to recover. Sometimes my day is just a bust and I break my streak. I think a nice feature would be to earn streak menders for every time you pick right back up and keep your streak going despite that day that just gets away. In knitting, you can go back a pick up a stick, I am suggesting the same sort of thing. The result would be a great incentive to not let failure defeat you. 3 streak menders earned could be spent to repair a streak or something.

I get a lot of positive things from writing here so I thought I would do something that might help other people and this seemed like one way of doing that.

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States, I’d like to say that I’m thankful to you, Buster, for creating this site, and to all my fellow writers here. Since February of this year I’ve been writing on and off, and my total is 88,384 words off the top of my mind.

My longest streak is only 16 days, but I’ve completed 750 words on 89 days, which may seem little compared to other writers, but for me it is very significant. Since I seldom write on weekends, I like starting every Monday as an egg and trying to get to a Turkey or sometimes a Penguin each week. I’ve learned to forgive myself for the lapses and start anew each time.

I’ve learned a lot about what’s bothering me under all the busyness of my day job. Thanks, everyone!

A better mobile site

The reminder email is great. It would be great to get an email when we have done the words too. I have forgotten to save my words twice this month though I wrote them:)
The site is still brilliant though tweaks aside.

750 Words has both inspired and frustrated me at various times. Inspired because you have those days when everything just flows. Frustrated when I’m blocked and no matter what I do, I have to struggle to shake my words loose.
However, I like the both the struggle and the ease – it’s like life. There’s a little bit of both and I look forward to wrestling with my muse every day.

An iPhone/iPad app

I write from my iPhone a lot because I travel a lot and sometimes just work crazy hours that don’t allow me to be at a computer for even the 13 minutes it usually takes me to hammer out the 750. I’d love an app that allows me to complete this and hold my streak without so much difficulty with compatibility.

As I amble through my third One Month Challenge, I am reminded constantly of how necessary this ritual has become in my professional life. It helped me get passed the desire to give in to excuses such as not being in the mood to write or not feeling in control creatively. The challenge forces me to plow through, and even when it is tough to churn out a decent 750 words, once I get past the number I always feel like writing more. I wonder what it is about the tipping point of 750….?

I have dreamed of writing a picture book since 2006. However, I lost my focus on fiction writing when I began writing a professional book in 2009. My book, Day by Day: Refining Writing Workshop Through 180 Days of Reflective Practice, came out in November 2010 right before I gave birth to my daughter. Once she came along, I had another excuse to push off writing fiction since I had so much to do. However, I recently realized that I can no longer lose my focus if I want to publish children’s picture books. Therefore, 750 Words has been an excellent tool for me to GET WRITING again! I have been using my 750 Words to develop and write two separate stories that have been rolling around in my head for awhile. I’m excited about the possibilities now that I’m writing fiction again. THANK YOU!

I’m in deep in this NaNiWriMo Competition and I’m loving it! I enjoy writing much more than ever before, thanks to this site and to the suggestion of the NaNoWriMo. I’d heard about the competition before but this site had propelled me to do it. Since I was writing everyday anyway through this, I figured I could crank out a novel and I’m still doing it! I don’t want to stop. I didn’t see how long I would keep up with this site, but since I now feel inspired to do novels next year and so on, I could see myself writing much more. Also, with the Script Frenzy coming in April. I’ll write my notes here and write a script with them, so this has been valuable for my mind and my creativity. You’ve received many thanks from many patrons of this site and I’ll give you one more to add to that: Thanks, Buster!

Question: How is it that, here at 750, sad is measured as a negative in stats? Writing every day is a bit like peeling away layers, getting to core truths. I see that as positive. My truth welling up. Thank you, 750.

I’m jumping into the pool of others who feel wonderfully transformed by daily writing. I’ve been more open, more thoughtful and more honest in my 750 words than I ever thought possible. This really is an extraordinary way to clear the clutter and capture the inner voice. Thank you for making it simple, motivational and fun to write every day. I’m happier because of it.

I’ve been writing for 64 days in a row now! A friend told me about 750 words; I started writing that night and I haven’t stopped since. 750 words has helped me to clear the clutter out of my head and just work on writing. It’s really been amazing.

In fact, it was writing every day here that convinced me that I could do NaNoWriMo this year—if I could write every day, surely I could buckle down for a while and get down the first 50k words in a novel. I see my flock badge today, which means that in the 64 days I’ve been here, I’ve written 100k words!!! I should hit my NaNo goal for November by the end of the week. Of course, then, there’s still the rest of the novel to write, but I’m thrilled that my first time truly competing in NaNo, I’ve been able to meet the word count requirement early!

Buster, this site is awesome. I can’t thank you enough for finding a way to inspire this writer to finally write what I want to write. I work as a technical writer, and dreary reality had started to crush my hopes of ever doing something more. 750 words has helped me find that spark again and convinced me that I really can do this. Thank you!

I was on a bit of a roll recently (for me, anyway) of around 70 days of writing. And then one evening, I forgot to upload my words, and there I was, all the way back to zero. I’d lost my badges and I’d lost the November challenge.

I was so p*ssed off.

And then the magic of 750words kicked in, and I am determined all over again to put together another run.

Thanks for providing this site, Buster.

Regards,
John
