The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, so I thought I should add a little to the pot for next month’s bounty. I plan on getting some of them back anyways (this is where people usually start to tell me I shouldn’t be too cocky).

I’ve been a friend of Boston’s 826 for a while, and am delighted to be able to share with them. Also, I should say, a little embarrassed that I didn’t realize (until now) that I could do so. Good work by good people always deserves help from the rest of us.

Given that it is the Holiday season, I feel that it is best to give a little, and to take a minute to realize just how much this site has helped me! Thanks again Buster!

750 words has been an incredible help. Thanks for the opportunity to get things out of my head in a safe place. The more I write, the more I realize just how much I need to write. Thanks for the great place to do it!

Metadata updating after the fact

I would LOVE to be able to ‘tag’ my entries with Metadata after the fact — it would make it easier to FIND important snippits that are buried in my text (SUBJECT: YYY) as well as allowing me to add details about the day that might not have been true YET when I did my writing (MEDITATE:30) . So — rather than letting me edit the whole day’s work, just allowing me to add some metadata would be super awsomealicious… (I’ve been writing 750 words, I can write some made-up ones if I please…)

Elapsed time indicator on "Write" page

Just like the word count at the bottom of the “Write” page, this display would let you know how long you have been writing. I am trying to get the Cheetah badge and it would help motivate me to quit dawdling when I write. Thanks.

750 words is one of the great discoveries of the year. This is my way of expressing thanks. Not long ago my dear partner and wife urged me to try it, and, predictably enough, I was skeptical at first, but now I have written for almost 40 days in a row and can’t imagine my day without it. 750 makes me more reflective and really encourages me to get down on paper the concerns that are obsessing me. As Buster recently suggested, 750 is the kind of habit that makes us more thoughtful, more aware, more lively. I love it and hope to be a regular user for many months and even years to come. Hail 750! A wonderful way to write, to think, and to be.

Feeling pretty happy with myself right about now. I started back in September (even tried to do the challenge). However, missing a day in the second week of that month disappointed me a little, and I gave up on the site for about a month. Somehow, I found the spirit of writing again mid-October and haven’t stopped since. I just got day 70 and now currently working towards 100. It’s going to be tough with Christmas and New Year’s coming up, but something tells me that I am going to get it. Somehow just pulled nearly 4,000 words out of nowhere today (after days of writing 750 to 850 words). Let’s just hope that this energy sticks around for a little while. And I am so close to getting the 100,000 word badge that it hurts (only 25,000 to go). I should be getting it the first part of January if I keep going the way it’s been going lately.

I am so happy to get all my bitching and complaining out of the way at the beginning of the day! This has helped my brain to be a more pleasant place to hang out. Best of all, whiny entries were mostly at the beginning of the month, and I’ve moved on to more interesting (to me) thoughts! Thank you, Buster, for such a wonderful tool. I feel back on track as a writer even though I’m on the last stretch of a non-writing graduate degree!

I'd love to wear a t-shirt from 750words.com

I woke up yesterday, 1 day closer to getting to 100-day streak. And I thought “when I get there i want the t-shirt.” I’d love (and buy) a t-shirt with a badge…I’d buy one for every badge I have. The front would have the badge on it (not too big, high-res) and the back would have 750words.com up at the neck, you know like all those other digital schwag shirts. Cafe Press would make it easy. Please, Buster, pleeeeeze can we haz shirts?

I’m now on my longest-ever streak on 750 Words: 25 days. That may not seem like much but it is to me. I have to be cautious that I’m not reinforcing my own perfectionism with trying to maintain a streak, but the daily writing practice is really so useful. The writing itself is helpful, as I see what’s on my mind on a given day, and the practice aspect is useful too, as I see that I can maintain something regularly without a Herculean effort.

Thank you so much for this website, Buster! I’m a writing coach and have been recommending the site to my clients for awhile, but only this week have started using it myself. It’s a fantastic resource! Many kudos to you, and to all of the fabulous writers. You all rock! :)

750 Words as a spiritual practice: #$^%* I was sitting a the computer ALL day long. I wrote hundreds of words, but the computer does not lie, and it does not forgive. Just shy of another albatross, for the second month running, missing just one day… The practice comes not in being successful everyday (though that takes discipline), it comes in how I return to begin again, goose-egg in hand. How do I greet myself when I COME BACK? How do I greet myself when I realize I have erred? (In this case I suffered disappointment and then began again). Thank you 750words for the growth opportunity.

Today I’ve reached my 200th day streak, and about 8000 words ago I reached 250,000 words written. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this site. It has transformed me from a writer full of guilt for writing, to a writer who has made time for writing in her life every single day.

Send entries as e-mails

After completing an entry, the author has the ability to send the entry as an e-mail.

This would also work as a way for users to save their notes on Evernote, as entries can be made in Evernote via email.

More badges for accomplishments

Because I am an acquisitive badge slut I would love to see more badges. Also, because “more badges for accomplishments” was easy to find and choose from the list. But the improvement I was really wanting to write about would be one that allows you to change your word count requirement (from 750, which is awesome) to say 1,000 (which is fully 33% more awesome!). But in any event, I love this site and its help in getting morning pages done and out of the way. Cheers!

750words.com has been incredibly rewarding. Just by practicing my writing, my confidence level in my writing skills has increased dramatically. Congratulations, Buster, for the mention in Oprah’s magazine, November 2011 issue, page 48. NaNoWriMo was also mentioned. They were mentioned as a resource in honor of National Novel Writing Month.
