The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our son Niko, and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Show Points on daily stat page

I love the points feature. Keeping score for me is a way of tracking how I am doing.

It would be great to have point totals (for both the month and all time) presented as part of the daily summary when I do the writing. On the page, there is a graph, some info about speed, etc. I would really appreciate it if those point totals showed up as well.

Great job! Finding this site incredibly useful.

Thanks for all the hard work.

I have never managed to stick at any kind of private diary-keeping, and anything I’ve written online in public has always been affected by having an audience.

And yet, for the past 40 days I’ve written 750 words every day without fail. I am a total sucker for little rewards like badges and points, and I’m quite attached to my little streak now I’ve got it going.

Having a morning brain-dump does amazing things for my clarity and peace of mind, and once I’ve started the words flowing I find myself able to write much more in other contexts than I had been previously.

750 Words is awesome. Such a simple thing, making such a big difference.

Writing Exercises

It might be fun to have a list of different writing exercises. A list of different ways to spark creativity. Then each person could mark whether they had tried that exercise or not, and whether they liked it. Also, users could add exercises.

For example:

“Dictionary exercise: Pick up a dictionary. Turn to a word at random. Write for at least 5 minutes on that word.”

“Magazine picture exercise: Pick up a picture from a magazine. Describe the scene in detail. Make a story about what is going on in the scene.”

People could vote for their favorite exercises with cups of patronage. If an exercise gets enough cups of patronage, it might qualify for an achievement. If someone completes all the exercises that have had more than X number of cups of patronage pledged to it, they might get a different achievement badge.

This could be useful in sparking creativity, fostering community, and providing additional motivation.

Hope this helps,

750 Words is great! My modmate (Hampshire College-speak for “roommate”) and I do it all the time. Her name is Aly Pilkons. She’s still in the April Challenge. I would be, but I forgot to write my words one day. But I still love the site! Wooooo!

More badges for accomplishments

Thanks Buster! I love this site. I’ve only done 2 days so far, but I’m hoping to do this regularly. I’ve done morning pages on and off for over 10 years. I wish the habit stayed with me; your site will help!

I love the idea of more badges! And maybe a page listing them all so we can see what we’re working toward!

Improve the writing page

I love this site so there’s very little to complain about. The only thing is that there seems to be a bug where often I’ll be typing, and then go away to another webpage, and then return to 750words and then get this red “saving an old version of this page” warning — I don’t know how to fix this and it’d be nice if it didn’t happen because it’s totally distracting!

This site is a revolutionary idea! I have found my creative sky rocket as a result of writing 750 words every morning. Not only that, but this writing is also a catharsis for me to get out all my frustrations deep within my subconscious. Finally, I am a poet, so this raw, unhampered writing style really helps to get the creative juices flowing for later poetry.

Thanks a bunch!

More Badges!

I don’t know why, but i find the little badges ridiculously motivating. I guess that is why people play games like “Farmville,” which I have never understood. What happens after I get to the albatross? Will there be more rewards to earn?

Love this site – thank you Buster!

I can’t thank you enough for creating this site. Writing daily is now something that I commit to and enjoy. It’s given me confidence in what I do and inspired me to branch into new areas.

Go Team! This is my donation for forgetting to do my words last night because I was too busy enjoying the Wilco live stream and getting my knitting mojo back to remember. Small sacrifice of badge and contest for three hours of good solid rock music? I think so.

I’m taking a challenge of a different kind, using to overcome some significant dilemmas in my life. The initial work is promising; the test will be whether or not I achieve success! Thanks for the place to work this out, and the support to keep me at it!

I want a mode in options that will make the entry page write only, no rewrites, backspacing, etc.

Ya know, I had no idea how much crap there was floating around in my head until I had a place to put it. And it’s not like I didn’t have enough places, online and offline, where I could do that. I tweet, I have a blog, I have a poetry journal, I write with pen and paper. But there are things I don’t want to talk about publicly or commit to paper. Meditation and prayer help a lot, but there’s something about typing it out and knowing that it’s there to read back over, even if I don’t. 750words is like a perma-prayer.

Loving 750 words. Personally I do it at night and have set myself my own evening reminder because it clears my mind of all the crazy thoughts that have built up all day and stops them spinning around my head and allows me to sleep better.
Thanks for the site, it really is fabulous :)

This year has seen the introduction of a few new, very healthy, habits: Yoga and writing every day. Both of these things are healthy for the mind – helping to settle it in an era of nonstop action. For someone like me, having the Interwebs at my fingertips is a double-edged sword. I get lots done, find out about lofs of things, but my mind has a problem with its nearly infinite size. It wants to know it all!! 750words helps me focus back on the local. Every day (for the past 21 days) I get the randomness out, think about my life, and emerge better prepared for the world. :0)

Photo journal

I’ve been keeping a photo journal/blog/what-have-you for the better part of a year. I got in a rut for a while, but using 750 Words has really helped me to get back to just enjoying the process and having fun with my camera in my little part of the world!

What an awesome addition to my routine! Being a child of the digital age, my handwriting sucks and I never manage to keep handwritten stuff very organized. 750words is here to the rescue! The more I use it, the more creative and rejuvenating my writing sessions get. Thanks for making a good habit fun, easy to do, and infinitely rewarding!

So it’s kind of awkward that, after making a huge deal about this to everyone I know both on-and-offline, I am already out on Day Two of the April Challenge. Shame notwithstanding, I resolve to finish this month plus one day of the next with no further gaps and to sign up for next month’s challenge. Thank you for this site and here’s to hoping I’ve learned my lesson about days ending exactly at 12am!

750 Words has completely revolutionized my writing. I have never been able to keep myself on a disciplined writing schedule in the past. With 750 Words I’ve been able to completely immerse myself into writing as a habit. If writing is a muscle, then 750 Words is a personal trainer.

I used to feel like a guy with an unused treadmill in his spare room. Now I feel like I’m going to the gym for my writing workout every day. God bless you, sir.

Better infrastructure

I’d like to see the infrastructure of the site able to support hundreds of thousands of writers at a time without slowing down. Love the other features — but the back end stuff is way more important.
