The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I have been doing my morning pages on paper because I’m doing The Artist’s Way course, but I keep coming back to 750words as a place to doodle, compose drafts, or play around with words before I send them off somewhere.

This is where I learned the value of free writing, and I’ve been doing it for I think 13 years. Thank you, Buster & Kellianne!

I started on this site in April, in the middle of the initial pandemic fears and shutdowns. It’s been a life saver in many ways. It just helps to unload some of the junk in my head on a (kind of) daily basis. Thanks for providing the platform!

Welcome back badge

A badge or series of badges that would be awarded to people who’ve fallen out of the habit of daily writing (after having already established it) and then come back for a determined number of consecutive days/weeks. I’m happy to be back after a long period of pandemic essential worker frenzy and it would feel good to have the positive reinforcement. That part works shockingly well, almost embarrassingly so. Like getting stickers from the teacher! I appreciate all that you do and I hope you and the 750 community are as well can be in these difficult times. xoxo, jen

I am so grateful for this site — which I heard about in the strangest way. I heard Buster interviewed on the Next Big Idea podcast about his book, “Why are We Yelling: The Art of Productive Disagreement.” Toward the end of the interview, he mentioned 750 words. I have tried doing morning pages a la Julia Cameron for years, but writing them by hand, and in the morning, always proved a barrier for me. 750 Words has allowed me to tap in and build a more consistent writing habit. I’m four months in, but this is the first time I’ve completed a monthly streak. One of many, I hope! I’ve since recommended the site to many people. Thank you Buster and Kellianne for this labor of love that is enhancing the lives of so many people.
PS — I miss Berkeley. . .

Improve the writing page

By allowing people who actually pay their monthly fee but don’t have access to their page therefore not being able to write. I have sent many messages through, asking what is happening? Please contact me so I can start writing again! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think this is a great idea…for a bit of a different reason…

I am likely one of the least competitive people going. I would make a lousy salesperson, even though I can do a credible job of helping one of my candidates decide to accept an offer from the company for whom I work (I’m a Sr. Technical Recruiter).

That said, whether the Badge is displayed or not, I do like the idea of attainable goals. I teach, on occasion, and one of the concepts I teach is SMART goal-setting. I think it would be cool if 750Words could have extra badges…that would be a stretch, and attaining the Badge would give that warm little glow…

Thanks for considering

I am very happy that I found and joined 750 words. Though I somehow managed to miss a few days in September and lose the challenge, I find myself coming to the site on mostly every day and starting my day with a 750-word journal entry. It helps me to get my mind focused for the day and meet my other writing goals.

I have been a member of 750 since 2013, at one time i wrote for 364 days straight. I missed that one last night. I grieved, I left for a while, and then I realized a year straight was the only award I hadn’t achieved. One must always have a goal. I am back, my goal, write.

Man, I just love this 750 word thing. this is great. I started doing morning pages, but couldn’t do them in the morning, when all-of-a-sudden I found this place. BAM! I immediately started writing. I had a great beginning and then hit some road bumps but now I’m back in the swing of things. But let me tell you, you don’t have to write 750 words, you can write 800 or 1000 or 1200. Write now I am writing at least 1000 words a day and my goal is to raise it to 1500 words a day. What I am trying to say is Write and enjoy this webpage. Thank you for creating this. It’s wonderful and as helped me stop procrastinating. Now I am writing 1100 words a day average. Keep up the good work. [email protected]

Wow, what to write? I have used 750 words to practice my Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Journaling, to write about the ancient philosophy of Stoicism, and to vent about various and sundry life things. My therapist loves it when I write daily and download the “pages” to discuss at sessions. I know this writing has helped with my chronic depression as it provides an avenue for free expression and thought that I struggle to get when I write on paper. I do not always sign up for the month and I notice that when I do not make this writing a habit, I backslide a lot. So it is a $60/year well spent. Unfiltered, safe, free writing. Thanks so much!!!

A better mobile site

My most vivid writing inspirations AND my most foggy creative inspirations, mistaken for lucidity, come when I am tired just before falling asleep. I did keep a pen & paper at my bedside, until for some crazy reason my wife did not like piles of scribbled on paper beginning to mimic a sedimentary rock formation. I would LOVE for 750.com to be more mobile, so I can have better records of my creativity and throw out the crap ideas and sift for the more lucid thoughts more easily than scrapping away at my bedside sedimentary late night notes collection!

I had been writing for 250 days and I missed a day a yesterday ( I have not ides how, I never forget) and I have been feeling extra bad as I will not complete this month’s challenge for the very first time. And then it struck me, how the habit of writing has happened just by me trying to reach one achievement after the next and before I knew it I was writing everyday. I am not a writer by profession but hope to be and 750 Words has given me a platform to get me closer to making my dream a reality. They make this fun, and I am grateful it exists. I think everyone should give it try!

I am so grateful to Buster and Kellianne. This site is central to my writing process. I am glad that someone knows how many words I wrote and how long it took to dictate those words. Plus I get an electronic sticker to show me that their appreciation is sincere. I feel they are saying, “Keep working. WE love how hard you work ,and how much thought that you put into your work. The end result is less important than the work you are doing. We have faith you will write what you truly want to write and what you think is beautiful and true. Keep working,”
Writing is lonely but knowing there are two cheering me on makes a difference. Thank you.

750 Words is essential. It’s where I come to empty my head of the things I’ve seen, heard, and felt that day – I pour them out so that the best images can have more space in there to grow strong and bright.

I have not written a testimonial note before, but I cannot emphasize enough how much 750words has done over the past 8+ years. I have committed countless hours and millions of words to this website and still going strong. It has very much become a constant in my life. It has helped me as a writer, but been a boon for my mental well-being as well.

The counter, the monthly challenges and the badges are the tools you use to motivate your users to behave and do their writing every day and, speaking from experience, ALL of them work very well, and I’m thankful they are features of the site. I just wish that there could be a few more badges that make you explore some kind of particular behavior (like the morning/evening ones), topic or way of writing. I am sure new creative ideas can be explored, and I am sure they will always be welcome – everyone loves them and they serve as a huge motivation, and the more there are, the happier everyone will be. _

Motivation needed for more badges. Any updates on 750 V2? Like the idea of a badge for any writing on any day. Maybe a “Keep Calm and Keep Writing” badge. I like collecting my badges just because. Procrastination is easy, even during the virus shutdown. New badges are welcome!

I have found it difficult to focus on prayer, to take time out from the day and spend time taking my thoughts to God. This is an amazing way of doing it – clearing my mind, writing down things that would have gone unsaid, uncovering deep longings and concerns that would have gone unnoticed. Thank you for a great site.

This is the second time I joined 750 words. My first attempt clearly shows lack of interest. But after what I heard from mentors about the benefits of writing daily. Immediately this site is top of mind. And so far I like how it’s making an impact on how I can make my thoughts organize and it gives me clarity because I can just throw everything here. Thanks to the admins for their assistance on my inquiries. Plus, I love the badges. It gives me a clear view of the goal I want to achieve.
