The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our son Niko, and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Ability To Mark Important Entries

Hello and thank you for this wonderful website! I don’t know if anyone else has ever made this request. If a particular day’s entry has important information or ideas that I might like to come back to in the future, it would be nice to somehow mark that day’s entry as important. Perhaps a button on the data page that says “Mark this Entry” and then in the archive that date could either have an asterisk next to it or the date could show up in a different color, so the writer knows there was something deemed important written in that entry, and would save the writer having to rifle through a months worth of dates to find a particular entry. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider this idea. And thank you again for this wonderful website.

Mulligans

I didn’t get my 1:30 self care routine complete this morning of which my 750words makes up 25-30 minutes. I do remember at lunch time so I jot something down, but have to get back to work so I stop part way through. I go through my day and wake up the next morning to see that dreaded FORWARD SLASH in yesterday’s rectangle. “How could I forget to complete my entry??? UGGHHH!!!”

My new feature is to allow patrons who participate in the challenges to purchase a set of mulligans. Just like in a golf tournament, these mulligans would allow the patron to go back and complete a partially completed entry. The mulligan had to be used within 24 hours. 1 mulligan for partial entries, 2 mulligans for no entry. $20 for 3; $30 for 5. They cannot be rolled over to the next month.

More badges for accomplishments

I would love to see more badges, regardless of what they are for. More incentive will keep me writing (and donating) regularly!

I was a member way back when, and used this regularly. And then, for some reason I don’t recall, I stopped using it. I came back a few days, and am grateful it is still around. The little badges encourage me, the fact that I can type things out quickly (instead of writing, which is what I’ve been doing the past 2-3 years) fits where I am right now in my life.

Onward.

Choose your own word count

I am practicing for National Novel Writing Month (NANOWRIMO), and I am writing around 1700 words per day. I love seeing the green box telling me I’ve done it, but I’d love another box that shows up at my chosen word count – or if technically that’s a challenge – perhaps it could be a NANO count which is 1,667 per day :)

Forum

Hey I’m not sure if this exists or not, but it would be cool to be able to talk to some of the other people here.

I think this would be a cool way to network with other writers and who knows?

Maybe you’ll make a friend or a business partner. This could work like a regular forum/chat room where they’re segmented up by like sci-fi writing, relationship stuff, etc.

Just a thought.

Thank you,

-Phil

My husband passed away suddenly 7 weeks ago today. I use 750words to write to him. I find if I word vomit early in the morning it helps me get through the rest of the day. I’m thankful to have stumbled on this site. I like that I can write from any device (mostly my phone), anywhere and I don’t have to worry about losing what I write, which up until now I was doing. Writing helps me remember.

Well, hello, umm, I’ve returned to the site after eight long months of abscence and now I feel like I’ve finally arrived at home. As if I’ve returned to an old friend and stayed the night in a guest room up in the attic, where it’s calm and quiet, where is a hatch above my head and I can see shooting stars from there. These stars are nothing less, but an inspiration to make the first decisive step after being knocked down.
For the last few weeks I was literally dead, with no interest in life, love or any activity i like. This included writing. I simply could not force myself to make a damn line. I was desperate, frustrated, out of fuel to burn bright as usual. But today it all changed. I felt better and suddenly come to decision to go back to the site, pledge some money and have this as a motivation to completely break through my depression. And I did it! I’ve accomplished 800 words in an hour, AND finally have recieved pleasure from doing it! It feels awesome to be the old good positive me and I hope, the more days I will spend writing my words, the better my mood will become. Thank you for this opportunity.

This morn I’m back after a silence of around 6 weeks. Feels good to do as Keats said and glean those things from my “teaming” brain. Maybe in Nov. I’ll actually make it on to “the wall of amazingness.” Guess it is worth a try. I am truly glad 750 words is here for me to put out whatever words of each day come.

This site is the best ever. I have always intended to do a journal but always allowed something to keep me from it. This site is easy to use ANYWHERE. I love that I can go back and read previous entries. It also allows me to clear my head on those days when things aren’t going well. I will be doing this for a while. So glad I found you.

It is good to be back on 750words again after once being a phoenix in 2010. The one thing I am still missing after all those years is being able to write my 750 words in a secure way. I just noticed that https is indeed supported. Maybe it is a good thing to force users to the https site. That way you are always writing secure.

750 words has been great at kick starting my creativity. It is the first thing I do every morning and gets my day off to a great start, even when the writing has nothing to do with the rest of the projects I’ll be working on that day.

I’ve been away for over a month for a variety of reasons. I kept missing days, even days where I’d written things: I was forgetting to paste my words in from GoogleDocs. So, instead of requesting a fix in my streak every two weeks, I thought I’d take a break instead.

And what do you know: I wasn’t writing at the same pace as I used to. I wasn’t writing at all, most days. Just fits and spurts, here and there. I’m getting winded before I hit 1k.

I’m nearly at my one-year anniversary of NaNo15, where I wrote a total of 102k in a single month of prose, and I’m not in any shape to try and do that again. So, I knew I had to come back.

I’ve decided to use all my cups for this note, and signed the contract to write every day in November. I miss the magic of feeling accomplished every day no matter where I am or what I’m up to, because it helps my mood and helps me feel like I can be a Real Writer™. Thanks for being an easy place to come back to, 750. :) Here’s to getting back in shape for the marathon that is NaNoWriMo!

An excerpt of my pages this lovely morning:

“I feel like I didn’t write for a week—I missed these morning pages quite a bit, considering I just skipped one day. But, like I said before, a broken charger counts as a valid reason to miss a day. Now that I’m back on track, I realize that I don’t want to live without these morning pages anymore; this keeps me sane, mentally strong, exhilarated, and always active in improving my writing skills.”

I used Morning Pages some time ago – maybe in the 1980s or 1990s.. I used to write them by hand then, which became a bit of a chore, particularly with my obscure handwriting. 750 Words has removed the ‘chore’ element, thank heavens.
I’d forgotten how useful morning pages are. Over the past month of so of use, all sorts of helpful stuff has come up – very useful. I’ve carried some of what came up into current or intended work.
It gives me a space each day when I lay aside the tasks of the day and allow myself to imagine and sepeculate about anything. It is really valuable – and no handwriting grind either. Full marks.
I haven’t begun to learn from the daily stats yet so I am looking forward to exploring how to benefit from the stats.

I followed The Artists Way practice of writing for 3 months about 10 years ago. So it wasn’t too tough to pick up. Writing gives a sense of completion to observations and idle disconnected thoughts. It ought to help me with memory recall of conversations and eadings, as I’ve learned from Benedict Carey’s in “How We Learn.” It’s retrieval practice, a freeform recall that tests my memory within the same day. It leaves my mind less cluttered to get on to the next thing. Almost like the meditative quality of sketching or painting.

Secret Badges

I like the idea of going about my day and unlocking secret badges that no one has ever seen before, to create an air of excitement among the habitual users. It gets so mundane to see the same badges next to the names every day.. Flamingos, Eggs, Albatross galore. Sometimes a few others, but rarely anything new that makes you sit up, take notice and say, “What’s THAT and how do I get one?!” Imagine if you unlocked a secret badge. You didn’t even know you were going to get one, and bam! Here’s something new that no one else has yet. Perhaps some of the secret badges could be limited edition – only available for the first 10 (or 15 or 25, etc) people to do this certain thing or type on this certain day. I’m not sure what they would be for – I leave that to you. I just like the idea of never knowing what could be around the corner.

I used 750 Words very sporadically in the beginning—tried it when I was going through The Artist’s Way, but found that handwriting was more meaningful then. I started & stopped many times since then; started up again last fall, and recently got the Pegasus badge for 365 days. I write whatever comes into my mind—total brain dump, usually in the evening. I think it’s helped tame my anxiety.
