The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

750 words has allowed me to discover that I can write every day, all it takes is the promise of a spot on the ‘amazing’ wall, and the threat of a spot on the ‘shame’ wall. Oh and a few badges as well. Who knew it was as simple as that!

I love writing every day, and 750 Words makes it effortlessly easy. The daily reminders are very helpful, and the ability to track key metrics of my writing makes the exploration of thought much more insightful.

I have been using your site to help me overcome the writer’s block that I have had around writing my dissertation. I am a single mother with a middle schooler who needs a lot of help with his homework. He is very smart, but does not write down his thoughts. I spend immense amounts of my own energy helping him to write his thoughts down and then I used to not have the energy to write my dissertation.

I started coming to your site at 5am every morning and writing about my emotions around my dissertation and what is blocking me. Now I am mostly writing the vignettes that will be a part of my dissertation and book on your site.

I want to support 826, because it is something like what my son really needs. I am sure there are many children who do not feel comfortable writing down their thoughts and fully expressing themselves. I cannot afford a private tutor, so I hope to be able to find something like 826 for my child. He would become a better writer through this, I know he will over time anyway, and I will finish my dissertation and a book.

BTW, I am becoming more patient with my son and his homework as I make more progress on my own project, too.

As something that I just did on and off when i first started, to something that I have been doing everyday now for 44 days. It may not seem like alot, but it has changed my routine, I normally do my words at night, and helps me off load things that have been going on, allowing much more restful nights. I can’t really imagine missing a day. Also, has allowed me to be much more creative, as I turn over ideas in my head for a different projects, I know have somewhere to writing those ponderings, without feeling like any of them have to be good. So, as someone that loves writing, I love this site!

Just hit 100 days, and now this feels like an unalterable part of my morning routine. For a while I was disappointed that I seemed only to be writing down my mental garbage instead of coming up with clever story ideas. Then I noticed that I was coming up with those ideas during other parts of my day. 750 Words lets me clear out the gunk so the good stuff can shine though. Thanks, Buster.

I never thought it was possible to write this long after 113 days now and still going strong. It helps me clear my mind after a long day of work on my feet as a nurse. I have a place now to dump all the day of nursing into and get my head clear to write for my children short stories for the magazines. I have a place to write things down now and go back and use some of the writings. Thanks again for this site. I wish more nurses would know about this and it does make a person feel better to sit and write about your long and sometimes crazy days.

I would love to see unique badges for each monthly challenge. It would be fun to know when we signed up that in addition to the options for reward and punishment, if we could win a badge for successfully completing the challenge as well. It’s almost 100 days of everyday writing. I never thought it’s possible for me – motivating myself to just sit and write whatever is on my mind. Short stories, sketches, fanfiction, one hundred days of creativity and I’m still deeply amazed of how my daily routine has changed because of this. 750 Words is something that made me believe that one day I’ll be able to write a book without loosing faith in myself in the middle. I’m looking forward to another 100 days! :)

I have been calling myself a writer since I retired (as it is not polite for someone my age to do nothing). All the other things I have tried to do, a writing course, blogs, develop a series of short stories have terrified me. I didn’t feel ready for others to read my writing. A couple of weeks ago I tried 750 words for a lark, nothing to loose, and found I could do it, I enjoyed it and even that the results were fairly good. My confidence increased and I look forward to my writing each day so that I am positively thinking about going back to the writing course.

In fact, when my router broke and I had to stop writing on 750 words, it became a problem. I would stare at my useless computer screen and wish …

For the past few years, I’ve had an incurable case of Writer’s Block. Whenever November rolled around, I would write for the month, but it was like pulling teeth. As soon as November ended, I would stop writing and would steep in self-loathing for the next eleven months. My friend introduced me to 750 Words a couple of weeks ago, and it’s helped me to turn all of that around. 750 words is a perfectly reachable goal. I have an 18-day streak right now, and I have no intention of stopping any time soon. This site has helped me so much, both mentally and emotionally. I feel a lot better about my writing, and, consequently, about myself. It’s something that I really need in my life right now. I’m happy to be here, and I’m going for that Space Bird!

This website changed my life. I went through a rough patch last fall, and writing every day really helped me clear my mind and realize what was going on. I also started doing 3 A.M. Epiphany exercises on here, and it’s such a nice space to write in!

This site has challenged me in ways I couldn’t imagine.

While recently taking a weekend trip, I neglected to plan for my daily writing. On the first day, I was able to con my way into a hotel business center to get online. On the second day, I found a coffee shop that still had a public terminal.

I had to drive around and spend a significant amount of time trying to get online, but I knew I couldn’t let my words go unwritten. How the heck did this happen?

It gets inside of you. There are days when I still almost forget. But I feel like I left something undone, and I can’t sleep.

I’m liking the ride so far!

As a science journalist-turned-community manager at a Silicon Valley startup, I often find myself wanting for those long, late hours writing my thesis or just dongling around with words for fun. 750Words has given me the excuse to go ahead and just do it again – be it for work, fun, or research. I think I’ll be using this place to replace my basic text editor from now on…

This morning after finishing my writing, I had to take a second to thank Buster for this site, once again. The daily grind of every day life got in the way of my every day writing. When i missed two days of dropping my thoughts on the keyboard, it felt as if part of me went missing, too. Spilling my thoughts this morning into this neat vessel called 750words brought me back. It’s excellent therapy, a lot cheaper than a shrink and more powerful, too.

Most days, when I write my 750 words, I write a quote from a book just to remind me that there are escapisms that aren’t all that bad. And, books/quoting things repeatedly also helped drill the “happy talk”, as I like it call it, into my mind, and thus I do my utmost each day to go by the quotes. You should try it too.

This site provides a daily space to kill and birth ideas, to praise and condemn ourselves as humans, to trust and doubt ourselves, and, mostly, to connect to myself and the universe. Back when I was a paper and pencil gal, morning pages were a huge part of my human development. With the advent of a full working life and computers, I lost that. 750words.com restores that experience, and connects us all in this private, but social, space.
Thanks, Buster and Team. And all best to everyone out there, from eggs to space birds.
