The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Thank you, Buster, for creating and maintaining such a wonderful community of writers. Writing 750words is a fully ingrained daily habit now, and it continues to help me clear my head and unleash my creativity. And thank you for the new Pegasus and Space Bird badges. Hitting the 365-day mark a couple of weeks ago was its own reward, but I have to admit that seeing the Pegasus badge today made me VERY happy!

method of saving that works

every day for at least the last 10 days, i’ve clicked either the word count at the bottom or hovered over another link (which brings up the “quickly saving your…” green box on the top right.) and EVERY DAY it chops off anywhere from 20 – 50 words. EVERY DAY. PLEASE fix this, as i have to go back and “finish” writing if it lowers be below 750, which it often does. thank you for an otherwise great site.

btw – it took me $4 to write you this, if you think about it. kind of funny, cause i know you “like to hear from us” via regular email. i’ve already regularly emailed to no avail. doesn’t mean i’m upset, just means i’d REALLY like save to actually work. please please please.
thanks.

After a long and circuitous route through graduate school I’ve found myself in the last few months of dissertation writing. I’d always assumed it would get easier at the end, but I have spent countless mornings fretting over the littlest things.
750words has been my salvation. It is the first place I go each morning, and it gives me a space to warm up my fingers and clear my head. I can set goals for the day or vent frustrations. I am grateful for this resource and for the things it has allowed me to learn about the writing process and myself.

Since I’ve been old enough to hold a pencil, I’ve been trying to keep a journal. I’d never been able to sustain one for more than three weeks. That’s close to four decades of trying and failing.

Fifteen months ago I decided to give it another go. Since we live in the future, I looked around to see if some online tool might help me keep on track. That’s when I found this site.

Fifteen months later, I’m still here and writing every day. To have done this, to have gotten beyond my past and finally done this seemingly simple thing, is a tremendous achievement for me.

I would not have been able to do it without this site.

Buster, thank you for setting up this wonderful space. May everyone who finds the way here be as inspired and empowered as I have been.

Thanks for the new badges; I’m looking forward to earning them. This site has helped me organize my thoughts better than anything I’ve tried. Better than other journaling. Better than centering prayer. Better than long walks. Who knew?

I got so excited over the newly added Pegasus and Space Bird badges that I just had to break down and write a note. Buster, this is a truly amazing site. I’ve been writing for 88 solid days now, and haven’t missed one since I discovered this site. It’s been so helpful to me that I’ve been recommending it to every person I meet who even mentions that they like to write. I love the simplicity of the site, and the animal badges, somehow, give me an enormous about of motivation. I may be a lowly albatross now, but one day, I’ll be a space bird – that’s my goal. Thank you so much for this site! It’s amazing!

In the last year there has been nothing in cyberspace (and that’s a BIG space) that has been as consistently helpful to me as 750words has been. The daily writing process has a uncanny ability to both soothe and focus. I have so much appreciation for the site, and for the care that Buster puts into making it better all the time. It’s good for you!

Ooooh! New badges! How wonderful to think about writing every single day for an entire year, to have a flying horse badge. And would I, could I, get the space budgie badge? Only time will tell. Thanks for these simple pleasures, its a great way to start the day.

I never would have believed that writing every day could be so powerful. And the silly badges are incredibly motivating! If I know I’m going to be out late, I write earlier in the day. If I know I’m going to have time, I wait and write before bed. On those days when I can write before bed, I’m able to sleep much better because I no longer have jumbled thoughts floating across my mind. Writing 750 words has helped clear out the flotsam and jetsam in my mind.

I can’t even begin to explain what this site has done for me and my soul. Instead of burying things deeper inside my afflicted mind, I write out my problems and troubles. And guess what? I can deal better with all these issues and actually come to a solution. Imagine that!

Ability to place tags

The ability to tag a place, word, or phrase in your writing to be pulled out in a separate place on the site. Sometimes I don’t want to disturb my writing and would love to tag things in my writing (i.e. todos, reminders, etc).

Write every day. It sounds so easy, yet can be one of the most challenging goals to a new writer. Get those words out of your head and onto the page, and bask in the joy of completing your challenge. Best of luck to you all!

A Search Bar

Some people, especially people new to 750 words, have trouble finding things around the site. A search bar at the top could allow them to search for things like “badges” or “monthly challenge”. This would help some people find the page they want without scrolling through every menu bar. Please consider this, mostly as a convenience to our new 750 worders!

An iPhone/iPad app

As the world of Apple grows and iPhones, iPads, and iTouches grow in popularity, an app for 750words would bring in so many more people that simply don’t have access to a computer everyday (for example, travelers). I strongly encourage this feature!

Offline Writing

I would like to request a feature that would allow for offline writing that would then sync up with the server when I am able to connect again. This would allow an unbroken streak, even when out of touch with the modern world.

It has helped a lot, I had a night a few nights back where I had so much on my mind and I needed to sleep so I could get up for work. I just could not get the relaxation to kick in and slow the thought process. I got up and signed on and just let everything that was going on in my mind out on to 750words, and it quieted allowing me to get some much needed rest. Thanks!

For someone who has struggled with the “black dog” as Churchill called it, this site helps me connect and always helps me prove to myself that I can do one meaningful thing every day. When I lose faith in myself, I write 750 words, and my motivation to do something else in my life grows. Thanks a million for this soul-saver…

I only joined this community a few days ago, and I cant believe what a wonderful gem this is. It has taken my journaling experience to a whole new level. I love the whole concept! I feel as if this is one of the Internets best kept “secrets” – my opinion anyway! It is really refreshing to find such an unassuming, yet rich and rewarding site. Well done! Absolutely love it, has set me free in more ways than one.

I am amazed how much the site keeps helping me grow. I used to struggle a lot to write my words. There were a lot of days when line after line was just inner dialog about how difficult it was to think of anything to say. I still have those days but most days, I actually write about other things now and it is almost like a therapy session with myself. Just a word of encouragement to my compatriots here. It keeps changing and getting better, in my experience anyway. Thanks Buster.
