The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I use 750 words to journal about my academic work, which is very useful way to get over blank-page syndrome and develop my ideas.

I started out wanting to use 750 Words to do a short writing prompt every morning to prepare myself to work on longer fiction. However, the features that tell you about your mood and concerns are so accurate, so revealing, and so interesting, that I almost immediately switched to journaling. Even without the features that explicate my feelings, journaling has been really good for me, especially since I’m going through sort of a turbulent time in my life. It forces me to examine what’s actually happening in my life, and why it’s making me feel the way I’m feeling, and even what I’m feeling. The addiction of the features that tell me things like “you’re more affectionate than usual” or “you’re very concerned about success” takes it one step further so that I’m even more aware of what’s on my mind and how I can level my thinking. It’s like a hyper-smart diary and it’s helping me understand myself better every day.

I vote for more badges on the way, between 30 and 100 days, and between 200 and 365 days… maybe one badge at 250 would be nice,,,, who knows, I like the motivation of the badges.,, since i usually want to collect all the ones that you offer

I started using 750 Words in July of 2010, wrote for 185 days, forgot one day in February 2011 and quit. I picked it back up this month because I’m now in grad school working toward an MFA in poetry, and 750 Words gives me the “permission” to write crap for the 12 minutes a day it takes me to pound out 750 words (I usually write more than 1,000). I’ve stopped worrying about speed, quantity, word choice. I just write. I’m not competing with anyone, not even myself. But I love this private place where I can think about why the word “noodle” wants to be in a poem about teen pregnancy. Thank you, thank you.

I would like there to be something for all times accomplishes… I mean, if I have finished one monthly challenge, I should have the sheepish stallion as my icon, and not an egg, simply because I happened to miss one day.
I also prefer a pegasus over pterodactyl, so much it will make it difficult to write on day 199… could we choose the badge shown for us?

Delighted to see the introduction of the “Schedule time off” feature.

I had been wondering and worrying about what would happen if I decided to take a holiday somewhere where there wasn’t internet access as I am determined to head for the full year and beyond.

Thanks for listening to the feature requests!

750 words has allowed me spill my thoughts onto the page like a bunch of puzzle pieces and better organize them so that I am able to accurately articulate what I am thinking. Additionally it helped me in my English class when I got the fictional and non-existent case of “writers-block”. If I kept writing something on the paper, I would eventually get some good ideas out. The only thing I really had to do was sort through what was actually pertinent.

Improve the writing page

Love you love the site.
I’d like to have more, easier to use, formatting options (CTL-B for bold, CTL-I italics etc.) the ability to insert hyperlinks and pictures?

I’m totally obsessed with my writing turning out on the feeling rather than the thinking side of the spectrum. Has anyone else experienced a switch? Also – whenever I write and I get “self-expressive” i’m so happy, but the result is so rare.

Temporal tracking of data

I would like to have the capability to see how my daily analytic data track over time. For example, how may days was a positive or negative, I would like to see time series for all the attitudinal and topic data you collect.

I have heard it says that it takes 30 days to create a habit, but on my first time through 750 words i immediately missed a day after getting my 30 word badge. Apparently it takes me longer than that to make a habit. But here I am at 192 days and counting…Thanks for helping me make a good habit.

I’ve written 50,000 or so words toward each of two different books. So I suppose the next habit to build is the one that includes editing!!!

Thanks for a great tool for making me the writer I always thought I might be.

Is there a similar app for laundry?

All in all, 750 words has had a positive impact on my life, as I am sure it had on everyone else here, also.
After all that stress and homework, it feels good to just let it all out by typing my feelings and sometimes just the overview of my day. Its like a journal or a diary, except only you can see it!
Thank you to 750 words for making this site and for all the great things it does (:

This site has been my only friend on some days when I needed to clear my head most. It is a listening ear and does not give opinions or pass judgement. It helps me think through my own thoughts, and I could not be more grateful. Thank you, 750 words.

If I use my four cups of patronage for this note, will four cups be added to the bounty next month, or only one?

improvements to editor & exported archive

I’m a little confused on how the text editor works… it doesn’t preserve a single return, only a double? Couldn’t it maybe also recognize a single enter space? (it would be very helpful when I’m trying to make lists – and when I’m leaving my metadata. I’ve had my metadata messed up several times because I didn’t realize that it would run lines together if I didn’t put a double return/enter after each one.)

More importantly, how about the exported archives? They’re kind of a visual disaster – no line breaks at all? I know it’s possible… another site I use ( exports with line breaks (at least the double returns) included. I would be very pleased if it could do the same here.

Thanks so much for this site.

Holidays from the Internet

On Saturday 8th October I begin a week’s holiday from the Internet. I will continue to write 750 words a day. But because I won’t be able to post to this site, when I return to Internet access on Saturday 15th October, I’ll have to start again from the very beginning. If I could book a scheduled Holiday From The Internet, to be paid for on my return by 750w*days absence, I could keep my Streak … which is at over 130 days and I’d love to hit 200 one of these days!
