The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I was in a writing rut before I started using 750 Words. I knew I should write, and write every day, but somehow other things always came up, and I was always able to tell myself “oh, I’ll do it later.” But once I started using 750 Words I was hooked. I can’t break my streak! Even if some of my days have been total blather that’s gone straight in the trash, every day has been good because ever day has been me, writing. Thank you!

I absolutely love this site. It’s given me the drive to write every day, whether it’s just journaling,or creative writing. It’s kept me going for 350 days straight now. And this is coming from a person who has never been so consistent about doing anything in her life up until now. The only reason I’m scheduling time off now is just in case Hurricane Sandy knocks the power out. I don’t wanna lose the streak I have going. :) Thank you for giving me an outlet to write and prove to myself that I can consistently accomplish this goal I’ve set for myself. I plan to write at least 750 words every day for as long as I can. I’m gonna hit that one-year mark and keep going right past it. Thanks again.

Since joining 750words eight days ago, I have gone back to writing my financial blog on WordPress and I am enjoying writing every day. 750words is giving me the opportunity to write about other things besides finance. I have been a morning pager for the past 10 years. I love the freedom on 750 words.

Only 33 days left to 365 and NaNoWriMo badge from 750words in the offing, too. Now that help requests are being answered more often, some frustration with the site innards has eased and the words are on center stage again; I do share all every day, including my own comment on the day’s writing and sure wish more people did! 750words is a close friend now and a place to put and store my words is magical. Thanks to all making it happen!!

Buster, I can’t thank you enough for creating and maintaining and yes, tweaking this great site. I recently published an article for teachers that developed first in one of my morning writings. I am employed again, now teaching teachers instead of freshmen in college or eighth graders. And so, I will again contribute a little money each month, a token of my appreciation for your service to writing. That is the topic of my nascent dissertation, after all, writing. Write on!

I use 750 words mostly for journalling and I have recently started adding to the “Share a short public summary of day” feature on my stats page. I find it quite challenging sometimes to sum it up in just a sentence or two and it helps me to see what direction I am moving.
I am probably just nosy but I would really enjoy following other writers if they added a sentence or two to sum up their day.

I’ve been writing for 365 consecutive days with this site and it has changed my life. My writing skills and ability to express myself have improved, but, most importantly, my psyche. 750 Words is instrumental in keeping me from going insane on a daily basis and I can’t thank you enough.

Nope, they are not a “reason” to be on this site, but some of us (Me? nah!) are “badge hounds”…. (there are worse things lol!) Any chance you will add a few more to the stable? Suggestions: for 500,000 words maybe, or a string of entries over 1,000 words p/day (say 10?). That’s two off the top of my head… had others but didn’t write them down; they’ll be back some day… thanks for a great site!

I would love to see more badges for high end word counts – for instance when a user hits 1 million words, or 750 days! You have helped me accomplish so much., but it would be lovely to get a reward for it as well!

Anti-badges for non-writing

Coming back to 750words.com after a long absence, I realise that I will have to write for 200 days before I get a new badge. I’m already facing discouragement from my long dry spell, and I considered making new log-in details in order to get a clean slate. Then I had an idea:
What if you could lose badges for days of non-writing? Or have them cancelled/crossed out? So, if you go one day without writing, you’d lose your egg badge. Then get it back again when you resumed writing daily. The longer you go without writing, the harder it is to get back to it. You think, “I’ve already broken my streak, so it doesn’t matter if I lose another day.”
I’d like to keep my account, rather than start a new one, because I did build up success in the past, and it’s nice to be able to revisit it. (Maybe crossing badges out is better than making them disappear, after all) However, I could use some encouragement to get back to writing. Thanks.

If there was a way I would like to see being able to re-earn badges after breaking a streak, such as the one for 3, 5, 10, and 30 days. Also think there should be more badges to earn overall. I love the site!

I love that the word count is unambiguous. Before when I wrote my 3 pages, usually handwritten, the quantity of words varied considerably based on the size of my notebook. I’ve found that I’ve been spitting out my 750 words for the day more consistently which leaves me ready to begin my creative work with an open mind. It’s becoming a part of the routine in a way it hadn’t before. Thanks, Buster!

I thought I was more goal oriented and I am. I thought that five hundred would mean I had made it, but it’s not enough. I love to write and I love to just spill my thoughts on here, to empty my brain of mental and emotional clutter, to exercise my fingers on the keyboard, to just vent and brainstorm. Feels good. I’m at 540 and going. Not sure when it’ll break, but so far I’ve kept it up. May I reach a thousand! (Actually, I’m taking it 100 at a time.)

I broke my 327 day streak in June and refused to write for a couple months. I just reached my (second) thirty day badge, and I am looking forward to more! Thanks for creating this space so I can forgive myself and move on.

More opportunities for badges!

I’d like to be able to be awarded badges more than once. I broke a 90 day streak about a year ago, and have been unable to match it ever since. I’m getting back on the band wagon now, but I have a ways to go before I’m going to get any new badges. It would be a thrill to see my second flamingo badge with the new date stamp on it, now that I’ve gotten over the ten day hump that I’ve been struggling to do for a year. And a Turquoise Horse for every monthly challenge, and so on. It just be nice for those of us who come and go from the site to know that we really are making progress again.

750 words has become the cornerstone of my daily practice. Writing each morning has helped me focus my mind, and clear the clutter of the previous day. It’s enabled me to better recognise the wonderful things and people in my life I’d like to celebrate each day; and in cases where I’ve not acted how I’d have liked, to go back and apologise, express my sorrow and regret. To make things right. 750 words is really precious to me. It keeps me sane, creative, and honest. And it helps me find the beauty in each day.

I’m closing in on one year of writing my daily dose of 750 words. The badges that I earned so far look so pretty on the top of my page. I’m concerned that the achiever in me will begin to feel neglected when there are no more badges to earn.
Hope to see new badges in the New Year!

I just want to thank all those involved with this wonderful project. I have been writing now for just under 2 months but the different it has made to my life journey and clarity is dramatic. It is the most important part of the day for me and I am writing in the morning and evening.
