The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Reward or Consequences: Do they matter?

I would love to see a stat that shows, at a glance, the Monthly Challenge winners and their corresponding rewards &consequences. Do certain rewards or consequences occur more often for those who finish the Challenge? I’d love to find out if there is a connection.

I’ve missed one day of writing so far this month and I couldn’t feel more guilty! I’m now out of the running for March’s Challenge, but it’s making me determined to sign up for April’s, so I can eventually kick butt and get my name off the Wall of Shame! I love this site.

I love this site! Thanks so much for developing it. I would love to see some minor text formatting options, such as bold and italics. Keep up the great work!

I’m almost half way through my second month and I’m loving it! I’ve never journaled so much in my life! I love the incentive and challenge that each badge offers and besides the opportunity to get what’s in my head out, I have a chance to earn yet another badge! Love it! :)

I have always wanted to do the entire morning-pages routine for a long time, but two things hindered me—first my severe hate of mornings, second my reluctance to write long-hand. I think I managed to get in two entries, and that notebook is currently gathering a ton of dust. This site has been an incredible find. I now write everyday, and always get my 750+. Sometimes I vent, other times I world-build for my story, and still others I just ramble. In all cases, I get something written, and afterwards I feel a sense of accomplishment—hopefully, after a few months of this, I’ll see definite improvements in my overall writing ability.

This is a great idea—I am even willing to pay by a monthly basis to keep up with it. :)

I don’t want to get too dark, but I have a lot of problems with depression and mental illness. Unfortunately one of the side effects of this is crippling social anxiety meaning it used to be impossible for me to talk to a therapist. Since starting to write everyday, my thoughts and feelings have been pouring out on to the page, meaning that when I get to therapy, I already know what to say, and how to phrase it, and I don’t have to worry about sounding stupid. I honestly believe that 750 words has saved my life, I wish I could give more, but I’m just a university student.

I would like to know what causes the stats to say " Self Expressive". Are there certain key words that they measure to come to conclusions? Just curious if anyone knows. I love this site. I’m on day 113 of my streak and feel like I accomplish something when i have written my daily words. Thank so much for keeping the site up!

Everyone deserves a reward for completing the monthly challenge. It’s not easy to schedule in writing everyday, but those of you who can deserve some cups of patronage to share. Good luck everyone!!

750 words affords me an opportunity to clear my mind of clutter and face the day with a fresh perspective.
It’s perfect for an uncensored rant…much better done here than unconsciously at someone close at hand. So thank you for creating this site Buster, long may it continue.
Bless you

More badges for accomplishments

Badges for EVERYTHING. Badges for certain stats would be nice. Badges/Achievements/Milestones = Motivation.

Secure server for writing

I’m censoring myself more than I’d like because I’m a bit paranoid about a breach of privacy. I assume you’re salting passwords and patching Rails vulnerabilities. I’d like to hear that you’ve implemented robust encryption on the writing content as well. I’d like to trust that even a breach of the server would yield nothing that could be used for nefarious purposes against the writers on this site.

Word Search

It would be interesting to have some way to see how many times I’ve used a certain word. I would like a search feature where I could type in a particular word and see how many times I’ve used it. In addition, to have a way to highlight it in posts so I can see the context of where and why I used it.

Proper Name counter

If it were at all possible, I would be curious to see how often I mention certain people and places in my entry. Usually they are set off by a capital letter, but it might be something difficult to track.

It’s helped me clear out my mind. My daily page can hold onto all the insecurity, pain, and negativity so I don’t have to.

Over a decade ago I wrote a book called “Morning Pages.” This 750 words is very similar, except I’m typing instead of using a pen. I love the daily reminder; it keeps me going. Great job with the website, Buster, it’s just what I needed to get back on track again.

I attended a talk by Julia Cameron last night. In the audience were many, many writers—published and hoping to be. I mentioned 750 Words as a super resource for us all—and as a tribute to her morning pages. I sure am happy that I found the site! Now that I’m in, I can’t imagine not doing the monthly challenges. I’m a very happy camper with all the inspiration. Thanks, Buster!

I think sometimes you get what you pay for. $5/ month to help keep the site going also helps me follow through on my commitment to myself: I forgot or didn’t make time a whole lot more before I started contributing. Now my financially pragmatic side is also on board to help me stay on the daily writing horse— I’m paying 750words to be my writing gym personal trainer!

Well… I blew this month’s challenge on the very first day. Yes it was a convoluted mess and yes, knowing that it would be, I should have taken a few precious moments for a precautionary scribble after midnight of the day before, but I didn’t. So I’ve paid my penance and am tossing in a cup to share for those who make it next month. Good luck!

60-day badge

The albatross is meant to go on a long journey, but 70 days between badges seems interminable. I recommend a 60-day badge that gives our albatrosses a place to rest. A clipper ship or an island, perhaps.

To blather on everyday and every month is my salvation. I’m so thankful for this site. Not sure how long I’ll be on here though, but many things don’t last forever. Enjoy every moment on this site as much as possible. Sounds cliche, but that’s all I have for now.
