The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Along with the website itself, the challenge that comes along with achieving badges has been an important part of achieving my 100+ day streak. I would love to see more. Thank you very much for keeping the website up :)

An author friend posted this site and others on FB. This has been wonderful and I’m telling my writing buddies about 750. It’s been instrumental in getting me to write regularly and the knowledge that it’s private and retraceable is huge. Thanks for the opportunity!!

Just stopping, for a moment, to smell the roses, and … I have a pterodactyl! La-la-la! 200 days in a row. I’ve done something 200 days in a row, and it’s recorded right here. Don’t know if I’ve ever done that on my own before, but I do know I’ve done that now. I feel empowered, and strong, and happy. I’m going to go into work tomorrow, knowing that I have a pterodactyl. I hope you go into work or school tomorrow, feeling good and strong and happy, too.

Improve the writing page

I frequently make indented lists outline style for planning certain things out, pressing tab to make the indents. This works on the writing page, I get the nice indents I want. However when I go back to previous writings, the tabs are missing. I know they aren’t actually gone since the tabs are still there in the exports. So I guess it’s just a display issue for the \t character

When I used to use Four Square I specifically remember how much getting the badges and earning mayorships and all of that kept me wanting to use the app and also in a strange way, kept me wanting to try new things, or kept me going to places that I needed to go (like the library, for example). It seemed like they were adding all sorts of secret badges that not many people (in the beginning) knew how to get, or that were very difficult to get. Then they went a step further and started creating different levels of each of the badges that you could be awarded.

I think that a good idea for this site would be to start introducing different levels of certain badges. Additionally, it might be good to come up with a few badges that only give a vague idea about how they are earned so that people try to “unlock” them.

Maybe mentioning a certain word in 10 days (not necessarily in a row) would get a special badge. Or getting an R rating or a PG rating 10 days in a row will earn some sort of badge. Using unusual or unusually long words may earn a badge. Things like that.

This site saved my bacon. I am working on a book and happened to write a part of a chapter here. When my computer crashed, despite all the fancy cloud saving apps that I pay for, my chapter was no where to be found….it was here, where I started it, on 750 Words.

750words created a minimal, safe environment for me to build a daily writing habit. I have used it in the past for NaNoWriMo, personal journals, and other writing projects – with great success. I’d recommend it to any writer who wants to keep a timeline of their work. :)

750 Words has helped me in a way I wouldn’t have thought possible. For over 20 years I have been hand writing fiction and non-fiction notes on various sizes and colors of paper, some as small as an envelope. I have kept these notes in vertical files, thinking that some day I would type them so I could use them in a story. But that day never happened until I started with 750 Words. Now I type more of these old notes every day and file them in folders on my computer. Thank you for the daily motivation!

I started using this site as a means of improving my general writing skills and found that it has affected me in other ways that I didn’t expect. I have been able to better organize my thoughts and feelings on these pages and have found it very therapeutic. It has also been the first time that I have been able to successfully commit to every day for more than 10 days never mind the 36 I have already manage to go. This has given me the confidence to commit to other things knowing that I am capable and all around made my life better, and for this I thank you very much! Keep up the good work!

I’ve been using this place to kickstart my daily writing practice after a year of grief, and it’s been excellent. The badges and monthly challenge are keeping me writing, not wanting to lose my streak, after many other attempts to write daily have been easy to break. Thanks for all the great built-in tools. It’s worth being a patron to keep this site running!

I feel like the scope of words is a bit too narrow right now, and so I mention “the dying of the sun” and suddenly my entire entry is about death. It’s a bit disconcerting.

Being able to look at the breakdown of emotions and topics after I’ve written is great – I especially love reviewing a previous day’s entry and looking at how 750words weights the words. It’s a unique and interesting approach! I love it!

It would be nice to have the timer keep in mind how long you’ve actually spent typing for calculating wpm. I sometimes jot down an idea at 1am before bed, but then don’t get around to actually writing that idea until later that night. But my wpm is calculated on those interim hours I wasn’t even writing.

improve the quality of previous writings

I like being able to go back through and read what I wrote before, but I don’t always save it in the form which I typed it. It annoyed me to go back to try and read a scene I wrote the day before or a few days before, and to realize that paragraphs I created with a single ‘enter’ punch have disappeared and all of the text is in one massive block. Since U tend to write these without the best punctuation, more focused on speed and just getting things on the page, it really hurts my ability to see what I was writing and to comprehend what I was thinking, the feeling I was trying to convey.

I started on this website last month thinking I would give it a try. I have to say, I’m impressed. People will do surprising things for badges (both for themselves and in general). I decided to pay the $5 to become a member and continue the monthly challenges for a simple reason: $5 a month may not seem like much, but it is an investment. By putting even that small amount toward getting myself to write daily, a thing I love to do, then it is worth the investment.

It was actually pretty difficult to find how to donate. Adding a donate link in the Settings tab on the daily stats page (after writing) would be very helpful for this.

I would like to encourage new writers here not to sell themselves short. When I started I purposely skipped a day thinking it would be impossible to write every day and I may as well get it over with right away. Well… it turns out not only am I capable of writing every day but I love writing every day. And I would have had an even longer streak if I had not purposely skipped January 13th or whenever it was. So not only can you do it, but you will want to do it.

A cup to celebrate being a member of the site for 50 days. Two cups for the 2 days I missed out of last month’s challenge! I wish there were more badges for those who slip off and have to start all the way back at day 1 again. Some way badge or something else to mark the passing of those old milestones. Sad I won’t get a new one for a very long while now.

Minimal formatting tools

While I love the simple, open look of 750words, I do sometimes like to use simple formatting like bold and italics to add style to what I write. I sometimes even use it to freewrite ideas that I then copy over to a formal document. Simply enabling the shortcut keys for these two would allow these features while retaining the simplicity.

For the same reason, I’d like an automatic space after paragraph for those times when my thoughts do separate out into discrete ideas.
