The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Alright, I managed to complete two challenges in a row! I almost signed up for this month, but I may want to take a few days off before November. NaNo is coming after all, and this time I think I’m ready for it.

Badges motivate me, and I worry that if I run out of badges to earn I will run out of motivation, too! Help!

I recently passed 100 straight days (and 200,000 words!), and I wanted to drop a note to say how much this site has helped me. I haven’t skipped a day of writing in 105 days, sure, but I also feel compelled to write more every day, because 750 words just doesn’t feel like remotely enough anymore. I am definitely more productive with this site than I was without it. Cheers!

Some simple formatting abilities

It would be nice to be able to format your text, but probably keeping the nice clean look of the writing page intact. Maybe keyboard shortcuts? Bold, underline, and italics can all have their usual ones, and maybe shift+tab for a block quote? If users need a crib sheet there can be a little button to mouse over or press for a handy legend of available commands.

I’ve loved writing for a very long time, but I’ve never been good about writing on a regular basis, and once I get out of the habit, it takes a stroke of inspiration to get me going again. Thanks to 750words, I’ve written more this year than I have the past two years combined, and I find myself wanting to write even more frequently. I love the simple setup and the achievement badges. Thanks for setting up such a great tool!

Life’s good, and always count our blessings instead of trials and difficulties. There is always hope and never give up. Just think of it that trial is just there to make us stronger than ever.

I failed to write my 750 word per diem on this site in September, although I did put that and more into a word processor. I still thought that the 750words deserved my 5 dollar pledge for failure.

This website has changed my life. I use it to pray, and it has completely revolutionized my prayer life. Writing like this has revealed incredible ways that God has been working in my life like nothing else I’ve ever experienced. This has been the most incredible journey and I cannot wait to see where God takes me as I continue. Thank you for setting this up. This site is a fantastic tool!

Strip asterisks and underscores before scanning words

As some of us use Markdown formatting, it would be helpful if the site recognized that “happily” and “happily” are not two different words.

I’m thinking especially of the most frequently used words that pop up on the daily stats page.

Secure server for writing

This is probably not a popular feature request, but it seems more important than tweaking the interface. While it appears that the NSA will be able to read our stuff anyway, a secure server would at least deter other actors from picking the lock to our diary.

1,000,000 words badge

I never thought I’d find myself saying this, but it would be cool if there was a badge for one million words. I know there are badges for a hundred thousand words, two hundred and fifty thousand words, and five hundred thousand words, but none for denominations higher than that.
I hit one million words today after about two and a half years on this site, and I was sort of hoping there’d be a little Quadruple Flock badge or something.
I don’t know. Just a thought. :>

The Celebratory Post for 1 Million Words Written

Over two years and almost nine full months ago I started my journey on 750 words. Now, 799 completed days and a 485 day streak later I have broken the magical limit of one million words. Someone might call for a badge for it, but for me personally just seeing that kind of a number up there is a reward in itself.

The guy who hatched out of the egg on 1st of January 2011 as the badges of this site finely illustrate was a completely different guy than the guy writing this today. The transition has not been quite as stunning as from an egg to a space bird, or to a Pegasus, let alone a Phoenix. But it has been a significant shift.

The guy that started desperately to write 750 words a day in 2011 and failed it many times, was just like that – he could not sustain a single habit over a long period of time. His mind wandered. He had not done anything significant with his life. He was mostly writing in Finnish. He had perhaps written a total of 150 000 words in his life, and even all that during 1 month special events like NaNoWriMo. The dude just could not muster up the effort rest of the time, it was too difficult, he wasn’t motivated.

750words.com has not been the only thing that has changed my life, but this site has been a big part in the massive change I’ve undergone.

Numbers are not be-all, end all, but just measuring up that estimated life total of 150k words against the one million written since speaks volumes. But let’s forget about numbers. That guy in 2011 was just a pimple-faced kid. Well I still have pimples on my face and you would probably say that I never grew up, but ever since I’ve pushed out my own book, created two websites, visited Asia (twice), written and published countless stories and became semi-professional writer – in English.

That pimple-faced kid had barely any friends and while he might have had ambitions, he didn’t really take them seriously because he didn’t believe in himself. The pimple-faced guy who never grew up writing this here, on the other hand, is learning to deal with an increasing social circle after years of reclusiveness. We have a guy here who feel raring to go and that only world is the limit.

It would be absurd of course to suggest that a simple thing like 750words.com is responsible of all of the change. But it would be as absurd to claim that it had no effect.

Besides just forging the writing habit in me and thus making me much more capable writer, this site has helped me push myself, it has helped me to achieve the consistency needed to achieve big goals, it has built up my work ethic, and slowly and surely it has made me see that I can do anything at all in the world. Out of small achievements comes the realization that you can do big things.

This site is incredibly simple, but it is a powerful tool for making people’s lives better. I love it and am deeply grateful for all the positive changes it has helped me achieve in less than three years since I joined here. I have recommended it to everyone and will keep recommending it. I will probably be writing these praising notes as well every chance I get as well – next time in fifteen days when I achieve the final landmark – The Space Bird.

Simply put, not a day goes by in my life nowadays without opening up 750words.com at least once. Thanks Buster and everyone involved.

I have not written this regularly, this deliberately, ever. It has been an amazing experience, and I’m excited to keep it up. I tend to be achievement (or badge) driven, so something a little extra to aim for would be a lot of fun.

I have worked with the Artist Way and Morning Pages since my Mother handed me Julia Cameron’s book when I was in my early twenties. I literally had handwritten Morning Pages as a practice for more than 10 years. Suddenly, my life got crazy for a stint and I quit for three years. I found 750 words and I am getting back into the habit here.

What I notice from doing this practice consistently is that I have become an excellent verbal communicator. I have an incredible vocabulary. I am incredibly perceptive. When I do clear my mind of all of the "monkey’s running around in it, my creative mind seems to have room to blossom. Solutions pop up in my mind when I least expect it. I am way more creative, vital and emotionally alive. I love the practice of it and the life force it frees up.

Ok. Big Fear lies in having 10 years of journals sitting around with some of my most petty, sexy, human vulnerabilities on display. It feels good to have 750 words to store my stuff. The privacy feels great.

It doesn’t matter if you become a famous writer. Write because it keep you alive! Note to self!

Ok. This is a request, not exactly for a feature. I would like to become a member of your site. I would like to pay in one chunk for the entire year. SMS reminder if I forget to write

I would love it if I could configure an email or SMS reminder if my words are still blank eg. “at 4pm send me a message that I forgot to write this morning”.

I could even hook this up with http://ifttt.com if there was a simple API to check whether I have written today.

I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that I have delusions of become a famous writer. Whether I do or not, I’m glad I found 750 words. It’s the one place I can vomit all the collected refuse in my brain before I write. And trust me, there’s a lot of refuse. From road rage, work rage and nine o’clock news rage, there’s a lot of crap pent up inside. 750 words allows me to clear my head before getting to the real work of uncovering all the stuff beneath. From the truth, imagination and creativity that I swear I have buried below. So thanks, 750 words, and try it for yourself if you’re considering a membership.

I swear I am one of the most forgetful people in the world. Or at least in my family. My mom comes home and I’ll be upstairs doing my homework and she’ll ask me why I didn’t do my chores. Chores? What chores? 750words helps me clear my mind and remember what I do on a daily basis, even if it’s absolutely nothing. I like being able to go back through the months and remember what I did from last year and see how I’ve grown and what has changed. It’s interesting. I’ve never been able to keep up with a handwritten journal, but 750words is an easy thing to do every day or every other day. Joining this website was a great thing for me!

Runners prepare for races—by running! I’m doing the same thing here, for NaNoWriMo, which I’ve signed up to do this year for the 1st time, and wouldn’t have even considered without this site. So, I have a double goal this month: the 1-mo. challenge, and to get a NaNo badge. I’m on schedule and task to complete both. I’ve done it! Yeah, me!
