The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our son Niko, and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I’ve used the Morning Pages off and on for decades; I have stacks of moldy notebooks in heavy boxes in my garage dating back to the 1990s that have moved from Texas to Washington, to Minnesota, to California. Writing every day helps me focus on thoughts, feelings, fantasies, and hopes that otherwise would remain unarticulated in the dusty corners of my mind. What I love specifically about is that I can do it anywhere, anytime without worrying about paper or a pen; I like that I can go back and reread if I feel like it, and I can tweet when I’ve done my words for the day. I’m grateful that it’s password protected, so I don’t worry about someone else reading my intimate ideas. As a mental health therapist, is a mainstay of my self care plan; I also recommend it to my clients. I rarely fill an entire month of green Xs, but when I do, I feel incredibly good about myself.

I have heard from other writers on this site, realizing I am not alone; that is encouraging. The site is easy to use and motivates me to write. It is like exercising, staying on schedule and following the routine is key.

My biggest concern about using anything internet based is the potential for misusing or abusing my content. This is a limiting factor in creative expression.

Full metadata stats option please

It would be very useful if we could track more than just 2 items in our metadata. Those stats are a very important feature for me. I’d love to track 5 items!
Maybe you could make this feature open only to patrons, an extra perk for helping you keep this amazing platform going.

Thanks for reading

Secure server, please!

I’d be happy to pay more per month for the peace of mind a secure server would offer. If 750 is really supposed to function as a brain dump, I’d feel less inhibited in my writing knowing that my emotional innards were better protected from hacking.

A little bit ago, I earned my 1 Million Words badge. Wow. That is a lot of complaining, shopping lists, clearing my brain, blog posts, gearing up, assessing problems, sorting things out and dragging my way through getting started.

The fruits of doing the clickety-clack on the keyboard: my book comes out today! It’s a humor book for dads called Man Vs. Child: One Dad’s Guide to the Weirdness of Parenting published by Abrams. I hope some of you will check it out.

I started using the site years ago, in a stop and start manner. But at some point it has become a ritual and a habit and I noticed that when I used the site, I tended to write. When I didn’t use it, I didn’t write. Like, really write. So whether that’s causation or correlation, it always feels worth it to keep the streak up. Simple enough, but if I concentrate on just “getting started,” and clear my brain here, I can keep writing. Thanks Buster and Kelly!

A year ago I decided I was going to write a book about my life in the emergency services. 344 days ago I discovered 750words and used it as a way to keep me on track with my book, and also as a journal. Proud to say that the book has been picked up by Penguin Random House and I submitted my completed manuscript yesterday. The discipline of writing something every day helped me get the book across the line as well as giving me a place to journal the good and bad. Thank you for this amazing site! Dave

All I can say is that this site has helped me stay on track and to write every day. While it may be hard to do so, putting black on white, pen to paper, is the only way that I will every get this story out of my head.

Looking for a space where the wandering mind can express itself and i have found at 750words. My ever alert, ever thinking and dreaming brain needed an outlet in which to just be and just get writing. No limits, no rules, no guide lines or guide books just plain writing practice.
Just go one word after the other. We are all in it together we write and we explore and somehow we know this is what we always were looking for. A home for free expression, the words that just are, unedited, uncensured, unstructured and not judged. They exist as individual entities of expression and they give freedom and space for us all to just come and be together for a time in our journey of writing

Well I have taken a very long break from 750 Life has got in the way, but there is always a way back, the pull to write every day and chronicle my thoughts and feelings without pressure if I break my streak or not, it doesn’t really matter, the main thing is that I am writing. It feels good to be writing again and this time I will be more gentle with myself and not get bogged down with guilt if I didn’t write on a particular day for whatever reason.
It’s still a great website. Once I am in the habit of writing every time, kind of in the groove, things will flow.

Thanks for a great website, Buster and Kellly

Personal Dictionary

It would be lovely if there was a personal dictionary to keep track of an individual’s made up or uncommon words and names, as in Google Docs, so that they are not always counted as incorrect and might even be acknowledged by the word counter.

Thank you for this wonderful website!

Force Save before 750 Words

I was thinking that it might be good for the nervous…over-thinking types like me to be able to force save my writing before the 750 word mark. I am used to working in Constant Contact and have gotten into the habit of saving my work as I go along because sometimes when I go away/get kicked off/lose power once I come back/log back on, my work (or at least the last bit that I did) will be GONE! This is a terrible feeling to have put your heart out there and then it’s missing. It can’t be recreated! Just a thought.

The Phoenix badge is mine. I never thought this day would come and as it has finally come, I really think using this site every morning has changed me as a person. Fundamentally, for the better as a writer and even as someone who can express my emotions with ease. To be totally honest my eyes are already on the next badge that will put me in a group of people less than half the size of the one I am in now, reflecting the awesome amount of diligence that goes with achieving each new level of demonstrated commitment. My sincere thanks to both Kellianne and Buster for this amazing website.
