The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

An iPhone/iPad app

When I don’t have my computer on trips or something I try to write on the website with my iphone and it’s so difficult. A dedicated app would be sweet.

My virtual cup runneth over with the columbian beans of silly puns, creativity and whip cream. This site is a digital karaf of free flowing ideas for the average joe seeking to caffeinate their writing skills.

I’m back on my 3rd day from a virtual hiatus of about 2 and half years. It’s been nice to recommit to spending 20 or 30 minutes in the morning and banging out words on my virtual page. I’m grateful that this is still a tool here for me to do so. Thank you!

An iPhone/iPad app

It would be awesome to have a well performing app on the ipad! Sometimes when I’m away from the office/home or on breaks, I decide to do my words on my ipad. It works fairly well, but performance issues on a browser just make it slow slow slow. It would be much better if it was just a very simple app (there doesn’t need to be stats or anything like that), which I can just write in with perfect performance (this is key, especially for older devices).

Personal word goals

Setting a goal of 750 words is great. It’s enough to get some good momentum going for the rest of my day’s writing.

However, my own personal daily writing goal is 1,689 words. I would love it if there were an option to set my own goal too. The personal goal would show up in addition to the site goal of 750 words, and could be customized to provide a target for those who write more, or less, than the standard.

Keep up the good work. Loving this site!

Prominently display your own badge

On the “Today” page, I can see the number of various kinds of birds spotted today. However, I don’t have the positive reinforcement of seeing my OWN badge. I think this may be buried somewhere via a link after you complete at least 750 words for the day? However, I think you should always be able to easily see your badge. How about next to my name on the Today page, and my profile in Settings, just to name a couple places I expected to see it?

Uploading notes

Sometimes I write with a flaky internet connection and so I to a plain-text file I keep on a USB key. It would be great if I could upload my daily entry via ftp sometimes. We already have usernames and passwords.

I just want to say thank you to Buster and Kellianne and to everyone who’s committed ideas, time, work, or resources to make 750words as great as it is. This is the single-best way I’ve found to consistently improve the quality of my writing over time and I recommend it to people all the time. Thank you thank you thank you!

“750 Words” has been Therapist, Muse, and Confidant to me for nearly a year now. I’ve been more diligent with a daily practice this fall and I can’t thank the site’s makers enough.

I can’t say that 750 Words has saved my life, but it has made me consider having a more realized one. It provides me a platform of introspection that I hadn’t truly understood how much I needed.

Thanks!

(The Badges are neat too! :-) )

Well here we are – I signed up for the November challenge, and failed because I forgot to write for two days over a weekend! After 21 days, no less! So I have paid up on my promise to donate $20 to 750words.com, and started the December challenge. This time I won’t be beaten, even if Santa tries to distract me with mince pies, Christmas treats, and lovely presents.

I love this site. I thought it would be hard to write 750 words a day, but after writing 500 words a day for 256 days in a row (yes, I stopped on a power of two, how terribly geeky), I think I have it in me.

As for what I write, well, it’s changed an awful lot from what I thought I would write. Instead of using the 750 words wisely and building a proper writing habit, exercising my prose creation skills, and sharpening the mental pencil everyday, I am instead plotting and scheming and using this private space to build my future while planning the downfall of my co-workers.

Well, whatever works, I suppose – it’s all writing, after all.

This has been an incredible journey in writing for me.a little more than 400 days ago I learned of 750words it was a way of keeping me focused, giving me reachable challenges until I was able to reach even higher. The daily practice became the catalyst to my first publication last January, then has steadily provided a resource to draw from, be it poetry, essay and now last month the NaNaWriMo badge. But that wasn’t the end – I looked at receiving the badges as the foundations. I’m not far from the last one – Spacebird. But does that mean I am finished? Hardly, it means a new chapter begins. 750words has become my Morning Pages yes, but those pages started my novel, explore ideas, lists and characters, it is not a notepad, it is what you decide it is, how you decide to use it, making it a custom fit to your writing. Along the way Buster and Kellieanne have been more than supportive when the technology will not obey. They celebrate with me. What an unexpected surprise in a world of plastic keyboards and lifeless pages. If you take anything away from reading my thoughts – I hope it is encouragement, not bragging or boast, it is a community of very unique people. Writers. Dreamers, Believers. Here for one another. Reading YOUR thoughts inspires me. I thank Kellianne & Buster, and I thank YOU too. May 2015 be an amazing year for everyone.

Thanks for creating 750words! These pages have increased my ability to write, communicate and articulate better over the last 3 years. It has given me hope in dark times, and humility in the bright. It has allowed me to become more aware of myself and the world around me.

Cheers! o/

750 Words enabled me to overcome the sticky start button in my brain, and get out my 1667 daily average in order to complete – NaNoWriMo 2014 – and I won for the first time! I wouldn’t have been able to stop myself from editing past days (thus falling behind) if it weren’t for 750 :) The word counter at the bottom helped immensely too.

It would be wonderful if one’s cumulative journal entry text were made searchable! That would be useful if you were trying to look up when a particular event occurred, or if you wanted to know how often you talked about a particular subject.

I’ve been writing here for a year and a half, and I can’t even articulate how useful it’s been for me. I general use my writing each day to journal and to plan out and draft blog posts. Writing every day has been great for keeping me motivated and on-task.

I signed up to 750 words in February 2010. On and off with the words for years, but finally, this month, I surpassed my 29 day streak to make 30 days, the whole month of November. Delighted. And the setup of this site helped so much. Wanting those badges, wanting to know I could do it, was so wonderful. Thanks guys. Thanks so much.

Thank you again Buster & Kellianne for 750 Words. I participated in NaNoWriMo last month. Because of the daily habit of writing encouraged on this site, I accomplished the 50K word goal. As we say here in Montréal, Merci beaucoup! Vicky

I write fiction, and 750 Words helps me de-clutter my brain so that I can focus on my creative writing.
I’m often stressed, and being able to type a-mile-a-minute about the various things on my mind, to get them out of my head and onto the page, is very helpful.

Export Stats

It’d be nice to be able to get the stats from an entire month (or all time) in a downloadable spreadsheet. Sort of like when I download my transactions from my bank. Each day is a row, and then things like WPM, time spent writing, words written, etc. are the columns.

I have recommended 750Words in every course I’ve presented. (Marketing courses, not writing courses.) Many have signed up. All have raved about the service. It’s not just that our writing improves with practice, it’s that this site is so “sticky”. Who would’ve thought that achieving badges could be so important? And who would have thought that a little writing every day could clear so many blockages. Thank you for an amazing experience each day.
