The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I have been trying for months to get my writing mojo back. Then I remembered to dust off my old disused 750words account. At first, I balked at paying, but that only lasted thirty seconds or so, and then I ponied up and started writing. Three day streak, mama, yeah! I feel like my current project draft will be done within about a month at this rate!

Planning Pages

I would love if there were pages for writing that were easy to return to and edit on an ongoing basis that could be used as space for mindmapping/brainstorming, especially for writers who work on stories with their words. This space wouldn’t go toward the word count but would be a planning space. I have used notebooks and other Word processors for these kinds of brainstorms, but I’d love to have them in the same place (more or less) as my daily words.

I love this site and just completed my 800th day in a row! I never thought I would be able to write 750 words every day and this site has allowed me to accomplished that task. This space has provided me with a powerful tool for creative brainstorming and taking the emotional pulse of my well being. I’m grateful for the wonderful habit of writing every day thanks to 750 Words!

Hello everyone. I have been using the tool of 750 words as a tool for practicing abundance. I allow my self to imagine what I really want to be experiencing. If I am tired I will describe the perfect spa week I am having or vacation I am on. I have been surprised how I have been able to tap into the good feelings associated with what I want as if I am experiencing now verse keep beating the drums of lack. I lookm forward to writing each day as my mindfulness retreat

I’ve been a writer my entire professional life (going on 35 years now), but that doesn’t mean that I have written every single day, without fail. In fact, writing for a living has at times made me resistant to writing during leisure time.

750Words.com has changed all that for me. On the road, on vacation, sick as a dog, too busy to breathe — doesn’t matter. I must write my 750 words before midnight. If my day looks so packed full that I fear I won’t be back at my computer in time to write, I will carve a few extra minutes out of the morning to get them done. If my home’s internet connection fails in the evening — as it has done many times — I’ll hop in the car and drive to the public library’s parking lot. There’s a spot there where the signal is quite strong, and so I can get my words in. It doesn’t matter what I write. It doesn’t matter when I write. I’m not concerned if it’s utter drivel. All that matters is that I write.

Every few weeks, I’ll go back over anything I’ve written that’s more than a month old. Complete dreck, I’ll tell myself as I wade in. But then one little kernel of truth, one little pearl of wisdom, will leap from the screen. Wow. I wrote THAT? I need to save that… and then another one will appear. It gets saved, too. Before I know it, I’ve got a couple of pages of ideas that I can turn into personal essays or articles or nothing at all. I can use them as writing prompts for future days. I can peruse them whenever my confidence flags — hey, if I can write THAT, there must be some more worthwhile material in me yet.

Even on days when it’s just all too much, when I don’t believe I have another word left in me, I’ll sign on and see that “XXX-day streak!” message. Oh, what the hell. I’ve done it for this long, I’ll think. I might as well do it one more day.

Thank you, 750Words.com. You’re the motivation I’ve needed all along.

I joined the site a number of years ago, and never quite seemed to get going — and then, this year I started again. I’m not quite as consistent as I want to be, keep stopping and starting, and that phoenix looks an unlikely prospect, but on the other hand, in the six months I’ve been back, i’ve written a 100K words.

I’ve turned into an evangelist for the site. It has gotten me writing, and writing fiction again, when i thought I might never find that vein again. Writing 750 words, any words, has stifled my tendency to self-criticise myself out of doing it, has stopped me demanding the ‘right environment’ — I wrote one set this week next to a disco, perched on a bar stool — I have to write my 750 by midnight, and it’s just 750 words, no one will see, I can write ANYTHING, I never even have to look at it again, they just don’t matter — and out of the blue I’ve been writing fiction again, finally. Some days I’m getting out huge numbers of words, dodging that inner critic that insists that my ideas, my words are just not good enough. All I have to do is write. I can worry about perfection some other day.

The lure of a badge has kept me inspired to write over 500K words and be on a 200+ day writing streak. In the two years I’ve been on the site, I’ve only missed a couple days. Like Cinderella I pushed my writing past the midnight mark. I had to start over the next day.

When I passed the 500,000 word mark, I noticed that I got a badge. It seems, though, that badge isn’t listed on the badges available on the site. As a result, I don’t know how many other people have made it to that point.

I also wonder if there is a 1,000,000 words badge. I’ve seen that some people have reached that point as well. It would be nice to know how many people have.

I love this site. It has been a companion, a coach, and a teacher as I’ve struggled through a rough period with severe depression. I often tell myself that I can accomplish a new task because I have been able to reach goals on this site.

Buster and Kellianne, thanks for the site and the work that goes into it. I am a big fan and often recommend it to friends and family.

This evening’s post marks 167 consecutive days of “just because” writing… There’s no goal, reason, rhyme or rhythm to it, just a daily word dump with (very often!) a surprising line or three to tease and confound. Somehow it just works.. thanks!

Signing up has given me sense of accomplishment and helped me negotiate a meaningful agreement with myself. I love that I get reminders and that the content is not judged or evaluated – has freed me to just get into the habit of writing. Fulfilling the contract I make with myself provides me sense of self-trust, like building credit, that improve over time with regularity. Thank you for creating this resource.

Improve the writing page

It sounds so harsh, ‘improve’. I only have suggestions:
1) I saw this a while ago and thought it sounded like an amazing idea: to have several different pages as to compartmentalise if you use 750words for both journalling purposes and fictional ones.
2) that the formatting stays the way it is while you write even after the day has ended; I often use 750words for writing short or longer pieces of prose and if I forget to copy it to a Word document before the end of the day, I have to reformat it, because the lines are suddenly clogging

750 words has changed my life – it is something I look forward to do every morning. It has grounded and centered me and it is a comforting voice to all that is going on in my mind, heart and soul. Anytime I am worried or upset I know writing these pages will calm, soothe and give an authentic picture to what is going on in my inner world and space and bring out into to the open so that I can deal with the issues that arise. It’s amazing how relaxing it is this routine and habit that this now has become for me and it is something I do with joy and alacrity no matter what the mood is of the content matter of what I write. Thank you for Buster and Kelly for keeping my writing voice well oiled through the practice of writing every day no matter what.

I want a million word badge. To keep me going for the rest of my life i want a 2,000 day badge and a 3,000 day badge. My knowing those badges are out there will keep me writing for decades, into my seventy and eighties. I think a 3,650 day badge would be excellent.

I have been on this website for many years, but I haven’t written in a few. Since my nan passed away I have struggled with writing. However, I remembered this website a few weeks ago and I decided that I was going to start writing again. I knew that there was a monthly sign up challenge and so I thought I would sign up for August. When I saw the “NaNoWriMo” badge I thought that this was my chance to actually write about all of the ideas I’ve had for novels over the years.

So far this month I have written 2,000 words every day. I plan to do this for the whole month and I will have a draft novel to show for it. The motivation to earn the badges keeps me going and I’m grateful to the website for this and for providing a word count so I know how much further I have to go on for!

Thanks, Buster and Kellianne, for providing this brain dump habit motivator space thing. (Wow! I am an awesome writer, aren’t I?) My partner can always tell when I haven’t “done my words,” as we say, at night because I am much more level after I have. So often, I find that somewhere in the middle of my entry, my fingers keep going ahead of my conscious thought, and I find in my head I never would have discovered had I not written.

Perhaps more importantly, I have always loved a badge, like the Tracy-Flickster-wanna-be I am, so those have provided me an excellent incentive on those nights I’m feeling lazy. I just earned my Space Bird and was so proud! The four chinchillas who let me live with them, feed them, and clean their homes really want me to make it to the Flying Squirrel, for rodent-loyalty reasons, of course.

Thanks bunches for all you do!

I signed up for an account here before June 13, 2013, and was grandfathered in, and I cannot be more thrilled that I was. I, admittedly, mostly forgot about this site after the first month or so of usage, but now, a bit more than 2 years since I signed up, I have just completed my first full month!!

Writing is my passion, and I don’t know where I’d be without it, but sometimes it does feel like a chore to get the words out on a page, let alone to make them mean something. 750words.com is helping me to do it anyway, and now every time I hit a day where my inspiration reserves are depleted and my creative motivation is just gone, I’ll write anyway, even if it’s just whatever pops into my head so i can preserve a streak. And, it’s getting easier.

So, thank you, Buster and Kellianne! I love this site very much. : )

For Android as well, though. An app where, if you can’t get online one day, you can write into the app and it will log that you did write on this particular day. That way you could maintain your streak even if you can’t get online.

Unless I spend money on a plan, it doesn’t come to be. Thus, signing up for 750Words patronage was my way of ensuring that, yes, I really would write 750 words every day.

The money (which is very little) is well-worth the investment. I’ve tried many times before to get into the habit of writing, but it never took. Now, however, while I’ve missed a few days here and there, the overall habit is solid!

I’ve started and stopped on dozens of writing apps and programs over the years, none of which really helped me write the way I wanted to. There was no inspiration, no real motivation. Until I got to 750words. I’m not sure how I got here but I’m glad I found it. When I write, I don’t care if it’s good, bad, doesn’t make total sense or is just plain embarrassing. I can get it out of my head and onto the screen, and it helps that I want those badges, that I want to continue that streak, and that’s a motivation that keeps me going. Thanks Buster & Kellianne, this really is a lifeline!

Thanks for grand-fathering me at 750 words. I am returning as a patron after a long silence. I’ve decided I need to focus on my own writing – the long list of blog topics, essays, web posts, half-composed e-book ideas, instead of just editing, consulting on the writing of others. I’ve been recommending your site to many of the graduate students I’ve coached. Now I’m taking my own advice. Thanks, Buster and Kellianne, for the site!
